Riding in OZ

Neil, do you know that most of us are huddled along the green strip on the right hand side, by the white sandy beaches? Once you get away from this bit there is very little traffic. There is a nice range of mountains - the Great Dividing Range - not far from the eastern edge. If you like twisty mountain roads this bit will please you immensely. Beyond this, heading west, it gets a bit flat and the roads get very straight.

As indicated above, March / April (our fall) is a good time - more predictably dry than spring, and with comfortable temperatures. I hope you will come to the region where I live (ME109 and Doug and a few others live nearby - google 'Albury'). I look forward to meeting you, and there are some spectacular mountain roads nearby. I'm sure we'll be able to arrange a gathering to coincide, perhaps involving a ride. There are also other mobs of boxerworks blokes further north, most of whom sensibly live in or near the hills. Check Rob's map - where the flags are is typically very good riding.

Three weeks seems very brief. Why not make it eight weeks (or more) so you can do some decent exploring? There are jazz and blues festivals at various times and places that you may wish to catch (google will help). These are typically held during that nice autumn period because of the predictable weather.

Surfing happens all around the coast, except at a place called Surfer's Paradise, which should be avoided at all costs. Sydney has some great beaches, and there are lots more right up the coast from there.

Surfer's Paradise...it's not even a nice place to ride thru. The hinterland there has merit though, and it's not too far from She'llbe at Nimbin!

In fact, except for the iconic picture opportunities to prove to your mates you were there, Sydney is mostly avoidable too! Climbing the bridge is fun, but not cheap.

Ok Thanx! I'll start my research with these tips. I've gotten a little more open minded about saddlebags. Sounds like Tazmania is its own trip!

Tassie can be a 3 day blast or 3 weeks slowly. Nah, 10 days max, unless you're into fly fishing or bushwalking (for example), which require time. The roads are tight and require a different style to Oz mainland riding where a constant radius is more common. Tassie corners will tighten up and scare the bejesus outta ya if you're not careful.

No boxerworkers that we know of there either. I know a couple of blokes but they don't frequent here.

Get onto google maps...add place names like:
Albury, Bethanga, Dubbo, Orange, Bathurst, Walcha, Byron Bay, Nimbin, Singleton, Apollo Bay, Dinner Plain, Anglers Rest, Dartmouth, Khancoban, Thredbo, Narooma, Kiandra...that exercise will acquaint you to the eastern edge of the island a bit, and puts you close to a few boxerworkers.

You'll find a mixture of mountains and beaches in there. Linking them up might be a tall order over 3 weeks though.

Once you have dates set, let us know asap, so that we can start to organise an Oz Boxerworks get together. Pete should be up and at 'em by then hopefully too!

Saddlebags go on horses, donkeys, oxen, elephants and are mostly used by Gene Autry etc.
Panniers go on motorcycles and are indispensable to the serious tourer.

If ZM comes to Aus, we could have him for dinner! I mean, he could come and join us for dinner.

Maybe even round up an airhead for him to ride.

Apparently, the road surface is 10% bitumen and 90% alloy!
