Re: The vanishing U-Turn

Yeah, I've noticed it to.

The freedom to u-turn is quickly disappearing almost everywhere in the country.

My presumption has been that it has to do with over zealous traffic engineers but whatever the cause is, it results in much longer drives (And sometimes through residential neighborhoods.) just to change directions.

In NJ they've added dividers to most of the main routes and the result is that you can literally drive for miles before having an opportunity to change directions! Of course, in NJ most of the inhabitants cant drive anyway, so the barriers make sense.

NJ is the only state I've ever been in where folks will intentionally try to run a motorcyclist off the road and smile while doing it.

During my ride up to Redmond Or. I also noticed that the cities of Bend and Redmond are infested with speed cams and red light cams. They actually warn you of that fact as you leave the interstate but i didn't take notice until I began to wonder why everyone was driving so slowly (Like exactly 40 mph in a 40 mph zone.), when no cops were in sight. Then I looked up and saw the cameras everywhere.

Now I'm worrying about having 8 or 9 speeding and right turn hesitation tickets arriving in the mail!

Actually we only have one traffic signal so if you need to turn into the town from the hiway that runs by it you have a controlled light to do so. As a matter of fact our upper grade school has a cement sidewalk in front of it. Our town has cement sidewalks on both sides and is block long. But that is it for cement sidewalks tho. Altho on my travels into LA or recently on my 2,500 mile ride thru Ca. and Oregon I didnt notice anything different. But I guess on my trip to Redmond I didnt spend anytime in large towns as I stayed mostly on the back roads.

When I have been in WC and surrounding areas it wouldnt surprise me that this is happening to aid traffic flow and accident prone areas.

What we are seeing more and more in surrounding areas in the Santa Barbara County are round-a-bouts which very few get the concept of how to enter, merge or exit from.

Maybe it is time to move to Galt? Studies have shown that the use of an amber turn signal does reduce accidents/collisions. It seems to me that the more traffic there is, the more ruder drivers get. Drivers seem to be changing lanes quicker and without a regard for other drivers more frequently these days too. Then there's those drivers that speed up (once they see the indicator on) to prevent you from changing lanes. I think a lot of it goes down to the mind set of the driver. I find myself being a bit more courteous, when I'm less stressed and have plenty of time. Consequently, the opposite is true when I'm running late and I'm stressed.

I think we would need a huge societal shift in order for things to change. I'm not very optimist.

Let's say you're following two cars down a two-lane road or a city street or what have you. The first car signals for a right turn. The second car then does the same. Chances are pretty good that the second car does not intend to turn right at all. He's merely slowing for the first car and flipping his turn signal on for, what, safety maybe? I don't know. As soon as the first car makes his turn, the second car will flip his signal off. Drives me nuts. This practice seems to be diminishing but it's still pretty common hereabouts. Does it go on anywhere else?

From a pioneering family in the Bonang/Bendoc/ area of far east Gippsland, Victoria.
Jim and I met him and his wife Meg and son Murray in 1982 when we spent 10 days trail riding, rabbit shooting and trout fishing at Mc.Killops bridge. At that time Jack was managing a sheep station near Mc Killops bridge.
We were so taken by this down to earth family and the surrounding rugged mountainous area that we went back 'at least' once a year for the next 25 years.
The hospitality shown by these people was just amazing. Jack would say "don't bother ringing, just come on down. The door's always open"
We got just as much of a kick out of these bush folk as they did from two young blokes from the city. The yarns and recounts of amazing feats told around the kitchen table were golden.
There is a rich history from the surrounding district of gold mines, timber cutting, sheep and cattle, personal hardships and bushfires.
There wasn't much of that area that jack didn't know like the back of his hand.
All these experiences have had such a profound effect on Jim and me, which is why we are still the best of mates after all these years. (tu)

Here's a short vid taken about 5 years ago, where Jim asked Murray whether he was doing much shooting. I felt prompted to add to the conversation.

Jack died about 3 years ago from liver cancer aged 81, and Meg died about seven years ago from breast cancer. She was only 64. Meg was as tough as nails and had a heart of gold. I used to love saying and doing things that would have her standing there with her hands on her hips frowning at me.
Murray is 48 and still lives at Bonang.
