A New System For Eliminating Tubes (no replies)

Hey...

I just picked up this link through the "Airlist" and thought it would interest some of you.

This company Nuetech, has come up with a way of going tubeless, while still running tube-type rims.

If this really works and works well, I'd eliminate my tubes in a heartbeat but since it would involve drilling a set of vintage Lester rims, I'm leery.

Anyone have any experience with this system? Do you see any downsides?

At first it was a minor inconvenience to go to the next light. But recently, I find myself at times going a mile or so down the road just to turn around. Is this a local thing, or is this happening in other parts of the country?

gearbox leak (1 reply)

84 R80RT Took a 2000 mi trip. Fell over once at very low speed during uphill hairpin and fluid leaked. I assumed it was gas but it was slippery. Nothing else until 800+ mi. later, when gear oil leaked. I checked the fluid level and an extra 100 ml of oil ran out. I cleaned up and tightened the the hose clamps on rubber gaiter and took a ride. The leaking slowed but judging from the leak trails there appear to be leaks from place(s) along the top edge of the housing.

Any ideas about what happened and how I managed to get 100 extra ml of oil in? I have never filled above the the bottom of the threaded hole. I had the clutch spline lubed late last year and the mechanic said the fluid levels were good. What's my next step?

Turn signals (4 replies)

I often wonder what is the reason that so few people use their turn signals. It really can make a difference in the safety of oneself and others on the road. I do get the idea that people, when they get into cars, take on an attitude of "screw the other guy". But in reality, their own safety is much affected by proper use of turn signals.

When I see someone use their turn signals, it makes me feel a little warmer toward them. Even if used improperly, the very fact that someone uses them at all shows that they realize there are others on the road and that cooperation is a concept that they may be able to grasp.

When someone pulls in front of me without using his turn signal, I feel that he's just trying to take advantage of people and drives in an adversarial way. Maybe it's plain neglect and without malice, but I don't react to it that way and I don't really think it is. Everybody knows that they are supposed to signal.

I think that very few drivers actually have thought about why we have the rules of the road that we do have. That fits in with two things. First, the popular mindset that it's you against the world. Secondly, the thought that one doesn't have to follow the rules is less dangerous when driving a large vehicle. Airbags and other safety features exacerbate that and make it extend down to smaller vehicles.

Entering freeways without signaling is very common. I notice that those who are trying to enter the freeway without signaling are typically not looking out into the traffic they are trying to merge with. Evidently, their expectation is that everybody else will compensate for their incompetence.

Where I live, it has become much more common to see people just whip out a U-turn. They don't signal, look, or wait until it's safe. It poses a real threat to those of us on two wheels and also, to those who drive cars.

I'd like to hear ideas that any of you may have as to what can be done to improve drivers' attitudes. To think of driving as a responsibility to others would be an ideal worth striving toward. It would require some doing to turn the attitudes of many around. I will say that in the 1970s, during the Peace and Love hippy movement, it was much more popular to drive in a cooperative way. Maybe I just need to hope I make it through until the pendulum swings back that way.

I think TV and print ads would help.

Chuey

"Operation Invincible Spirit" ... or, America's Endless Stupidity. (26 replies)

From google news ...

The U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington drops anchor at the Busan port in Busan, south of Seoul, South Korea, Saturday, July 24, 2010.

A large 4-day exercise involving U.S and South Korea forces is under way in the Sea of Japan.

It comes in response to the sinking of a South Korean warship, the Cheonan, four months ago. An international investigation blamed a North Korean torpedo attack for the incident.

The war games off the east coast of the Korean peninsula were called to send a strong message of deterrence to Pyongyang.

The joint military exercise is known as "Invincible Spirit." And while the forces of the United States and South Korea routinely conduct drills together, this war game is considered unprecedented in scope.

For the first time, the most advanced fighters of the U.S. Air Force are participating. They are the F-22 Raptors. U.S. officials say four of the stealth technology jets are taking part, along with nearly 200 other aircraft.

At sea is the strike group of the USS George Washington. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is accompanied by three destroyers.

U.S. and South Korean top military officials say the exercises are a significant show of force intended to deter North Korea from further aggression.

South Korea originally said the U.S. aircraft carrier and other vessels would deploy in the Yellow Sea, where the Cheonan incident occurred. That announcement prompted strong protest from China.

South Korean Navy Rear Admiral Kim Kyung-shik denies pressure from Beijing was the main reason the war game was shifted from the western waters.

The admiral says planners considered the objectives for the exercise and what needed to be emphasized for training, as well as the required air and maritime space. That is why, he says, a decision was made to conduct it in the eastern waters, instead of the Yellow Sea.

The shift of location may have mollified China to some extent, but North Korea is reacting with rhetoric typically heard whenever the United States and South Korea conduct joint exercises here.

A North Korean TV newscast announcer Saturday evening quoted a statement for the National Defense Commission: the army and the people will counter the "nuclear war exercise" with atomic weaponry.

North Korea says the maneuvers could compel it "to start a retaliatory sacred war."

Analysts dismiss the statements as bluster and there is no indication of unusual activity among North Korea's forces.

The current escalating tension comes 60 years after North Korean forces crossed into the South, starting three years of combat that ended in stalemate. No peace treaty has ever been signed.

............................................................................... ...................................................................................

So there we are folks, the good ole US of A is out there again, waving its guns around in an effort to quell those ignorant orientals. Any idea that Obama would bring some sense to America's Rabid Right has gone out of the window, as they obviously think that what the world needs now is a nuclear stand-off with a totally unpredictable regime.

Will the global search for a nation the USA can actually win a war against never cease?
Surely there's some little tin-pot country they could beat into glorious submission?
Somewhere where they aren't too fierce for the drug-raddled goons who form the major part of the American forces?

C'mon America ... bomb your bloody self into the stone age ..............

Sunbeem.

My Version Of The Redmond Rally (10 replies)

This was my third or forth National Rally but Redmond was the best one I've attended so far. Yes, the weather was a little hot during the day but the location was very accessible and there were several places to get cool (I just hung out with the Airheads!), so all was well.

I departed Santa Rosa, CA for the rally on the morningof Monday the twelfth , with the intentions of riding up Rt 101 North to Eurica and then heading East but for some reason I started worrying about the bike and the time going by and panicked, so I turned West on Rt 20, cut around Clearlake and headed up through California's Central Valley to Shasta in 105 degree weather but thats what I get for deviating from my well laid plan!

Heres a shot of Mt Shasta. I just love this place!!

Tuesday was a better day all around. I made Medford OR by lunch time and then hit the blue highways that led me through a series of small towns, before passing through the National Forest, past Crater Lake and out onto RT 97 into Redmond. Interestingly enough, the residents of Oregon tend to keep to the speed limits whether a cop is around or not. That resulted in my having many, many opportunities to brush up on my passing skills!

I arrived in Redmond at about 6 PM. Just in time to help Oregon Air-marshal Garry Newby set up the Airhead's living room and tables and renew my acquaintances with the Florida contingent, led by Kevin and Stretch. Stretch rode from Florida on his R65/2 conversion that had a 9 gallon auxiliary tank on the back, while Kevin, who had masterminded saving my ass last year in Tennessee, rode across the country on a 50s era BMW 250 single!

Stretches R65/2 conversion in living color:

Heres a shot of Kevin servicing his little 250/2. The little bike had been converted to 12 volts using a /6 altenator and points unit and he said that it was faster in third gear than it was in forth and that he had to set the points 27 times before he reaches Colorado!

I can't move on without posting a shot of Garry Newby. Not only was he a great guy to hang out with but he was tireless in his efforts to make sure that the visiting Airhead contingent was well taken care of. Cajun Barry flew in to Portland and cooked two evening meals for us, while Gary made sure that we had plenty of (Very!) good beer, fresh water and in general kept the party under control. Thanks Garry!

As usual, the rally seemed to drag along, while it went by really quickly. I took the Adv Riders Course on Friday morning and then went to a few seminars in the afternoon. I learned more about Airhead mechanics, practiced basic Qui Gong, learned how to pick up a motorcycle without screwing up my back, ate $5 worth of vanilla ice cream and ended up back at Air Central holding down an overstuffed chair until dinner time.

Saturday was Bike Show Day and I got up early to get Crazy Horse cleaned up and polished.and then delivered it to the show with minutes to spare, hoping for a Blue Ribbon. Unfortunately, the organizer of the show was bereft of judges,so he had drafted one female senior Citizen who knew nothing about bikes, plus one 13 yo boy who knew even less. In the end they picked the bike with the shiniest paint.

When the smoke cleared a guy from Las Vegas who showed up at the last minute beat me with his unrestored, near mint, stock and original R90S. I was gutted, despondent, depressed and unhappy. I thought about selling my bike and starting over, I also considered suicide and I thought about finding that bike, so I could scratch the paint with my Boy Scout knife but in the end I realized that I had already won the Peoples Choice Award! All week people had been coming up to me and complementing me on the bike, giving me a thumbs-up or yelling “Nice Bike!” as I rode by or pestering me with questions about how I built it and exactly what it was built from, and that wasn't just at the rally either. The same thing happened at almost every gas station, restaurant or rest stop. People just love that little bike and I have come to accept the fact that I've successfully created a BMW that really touches people. As an artist, that's as great an accomplishment as any.

Here are a few random shots from the rally:

This is Mat Parkhouse's electric Beemer. Matt is the Airhead tech writer for the BMWMOA magazine:

G]

As always, the rally ended sooner than I wanted it to and Sunday morning I pack up early, said me goodbyes and hit the road, taking RT 5 West through the National Forest to Eugene. I had been warned that the road was treacherous but AI wasnt ready for the sight wen I came upon a police cruiser parked on my left, directly in front of a totaled Honda VFR that had become part of a tree. Not a scratch on the new bike!

We finally split up a Shasta, where I camped out for the night, while Rein headed for home. Reinhards a good guy to ride with and I know that we'll get together some time in the future.

That night I camped out at the Shasta KOA and in the morning I set out to cross the Trinity mountains on RT 17. It's a one lane road, mostly paved, that takes you all the way to the snow-line before running parallel to the trinity Ruver and falling back down to hook up with RT 99 west.

Yep! I rode 1680 miles total, the bike ran flawlessly, the camaraderie was first rate and I had a great time.

Now it's your turn!!!
