gearbox leak (1 reply)

84 R80RT Took a 2000 mi trip. Fell over once at very low speed during uphill hairpin and fluid leaked. I assumed it was gas but it was slippery. Nothing else until 800+ mi. later, when gear oil leaked. I checked the fluid level and an extra 100 ml of oil ran out. I cleaned up and tightened the the hose clamps on rubber gaiter and took a ride. The leaking slowed but judging from the leak trails there appear to be leaks from place(s) along the top edge of the housing.

Any ideas about what happened and how I managed to get 100 extra ml of oil in? I have never filled above the the bottom of the threaded hole. I had the clutch spline lubed late last year and the mechanic said the fluid levels were good. What's my next step?

Each time I have removed the rear wheel I have lamented that sooner or later a bunch of dollars will need to be thrown in this direction. Now is the time – I dare not venture out on any long rides without a bit of serious ‘dental’ work.

Okay, here’s the wheel cup

And the final drive splines - not much left there!

I pulled the cover off the FD using Duane’s excellent step-by-step instructions (thanks again Duane). The crown wheel and pinion look to be in good condition. Here’s the crown wheel. The magnetic drain plug had some dark grey sludge with no detectable grit. The bike has close to 200,000kms on the clock, so I’m pretty pleased about this.

So, my options at this stage?

Buy a wheel spline cup and rivets ($200 from Munich’s). Then I can get the final drive splines welded and machined to suit. SteveD had this done recently by a bloke not far from here. Are you there, Steve? Any comments on the work?

Now I’m wondering how to get the crown wheel out of the FD cover. Or, should I leave this to someone who knows what they are doing?
Look what I scored today! or: Did they ever make an S fairing for /5? (18 replies)

I just recieved an S style cockpit fairing I found on the IBMWR Marketplace. It is a "Camber" fairing made in Costa Mesa, Ca. in the 1970s. In the sellers description, he mentioned the headlight hole was too small for a /7 headlight and that he had bought it off a guy who said it had been on a R69S. I noticed it had the holes for turn signals, and the size he gave for the headlight opening appeared pretty close to my R75/5 headlight ring, so I took a chance and bought it. Well, I'm happy to say that it FITS the /5... AND it's actually black, my favorite color! See photos of it here: [s753.photobucket.com] I'm not sure if it's taller than a standard S fairing above the headlight opening, but without the drop down part for the gauges, it looks like it won't interfere with using the stock ignition switch location. Question: it came with a new Gustaffsen windshield which is undrilled. What is the best way to drill the holes for mounting without cracking the plastic? Vanzen, is this something you should add to your "Classic Glass" page? If you want better pictures, wait a bit and I'll send you better ones of it... mounted too!

Engine question.....theory (13 replies)

The concept of lowering reciprocating weight in an engine has always appealed to me. When I read the German tuners' websites, I'm most attracted to such things as lighter con rods and pistons. Also, lighter valve spring retainers.

My question is, how does the lowering of weight compare to other performance enhancements in the real world? Adding cam, displacement, carburetion, and breathing is one route to more performance, but my gut instincts tell me that less recip. weight means more engine life.

There it is. That's my theoretical question. Thanks in advance for any discussion that ensues.

Chuey

Running down the Interstate with a very bright sun and it felt like it was running out of gas. Looked at the odometer and only had 80 some miles on the tank. Looked hard at the gauges with the bright sun on them and saw the oil light on. Pulled in the clutch and hit the kill switch and coasted to a stop. Checked the oil and it was good. Well it was only about 1 1/2 miles to the next exit so called my family to bring the truck and started pushing glad it wasn't really hot only in the low 90's. Got it home and checked the oil filter and it looked good but, not as much oil in it as normal. So next dropped the oil pan and much to my dismay the oil pick-up had broke off from the bottom of the engine:( I bought the bike new so I know the history. I am hoping the crank is good but won't know till I get it out to "mic" it. It was still running when I shut it down. Has anyone had this happen?

S-meyer vs Motobins reproduction seats (3 replies)

So I was going to order a reproduction comfort seat from S-Meyer, but they're back ordered as they sold out. I noticed Motobins sells a reproduction comfort seat. While the seats seem similar, they are also a bit different. I've heard that S-Meyer seats are of good quality, but what about Motobins.
Does anyone have experience with these seats?

It's part #91822 on Motobins website.
[www.motobins.co.uk] Series 2 valve Twin

S-Meyer seat
[www.meyer-bikes.com]
