The bike has apparently had several owners and has been monkeyed with, particularly the headlight bucket and electrics. The ignition key set is all fouled up and I'm wondering if anyone knows how I can wire the bike just to make it run temporarily or possibly use a universal switch instead of the original components. Thanks!

R69S oil leak/proper oil level (2 replies)

Hi everybody,

I inherited a nice all original California climate '69 R69S. It had sat in a garage for many many years with minimal usage other than a jaunt around the block once a year. I am slowly going through everything to get it in better running order as time allows. It was covered in fuel and oil sludge when she arrived. I've addressed the fuel leak issues, but for the oil...thinking it was the oil pan, I removed the pan, cleaned everything out, carefully flattened the deformed pan bolt hole areas, and installed a new gasket trying not to over torque any of the bolts. Now, I have positively identified an oil leak at the left side cylinder base. I checked the torque on the cylinder nuts and they are OK.

What is the proper method for measuring the oil level on the dipstick? Right now, I am at 1 and 3/4 measuring the level on the dipstick without screwing it in. I do not know if this is the correct method. I searched google and Mr. Ausherman's website including the /2 manual pics to no avail (I have a shop manual on order). The bike is leaking oil while sitting on the center stand...I"m just wondering if the oil level is too high? (I know on my R90 one has to keep the level only 1/2 way between the marks.) I really hate oil leaks, probably my biggest pet peave LOL. I'm now wondering if a complete tear down/base gasket replacement is the only thing that will stop this leak. Yes, I've researched the slinger info, the bike has 40k miles so its probably due. I'm getting married next year so financially that isn't in the cards right now. :( I would really like to just do the steering bearings/front end overhaul and complete tune up and at least get her to the Harvest Classic in October this year!

THanks in advance,
Kevin in Austin, TX

I stopped at the general store to relax and have a beer and the happily, the bike got it's share of attention.

To get right to the point, some old hippy-type guy offered to sell me an R-50/2 frame and some part of an engine for $350.
Greetings! (10 replies)

Hey all,

Just signed up, and recently picked up an R60US. Thought I'd share a pic, share some info, and ask a thousand questions! I picked it up on eBay for $7500, and it was local which is always a bonus. It also seemed to be in the average price range. Hopefully you guys won't tell me I was raked over the coals, but it seemed like a solid bike and I saw it in person before buying it. It had been in storage for awhile, not too long though maybe a year according to the previous owner. He is a cycle collector, and he had drained the fuel and the battery was removed before storing which was good to hear. He installed a battery, put some gas in the tank, but had a hard time kicking it over. Once I got onto the kick starter for him it fired right up. I've fired it up a few times to knock it around the storage area and fill it up with gas at the station across the street, and it always fires up with one kick.

For the first question, is there anything obvious that a newb should be aware of? I've read as much as I can on the net, and have managed to track down a Clymers manual, a copy of a shop manual, and a copy of a handbook. I've read through most of the preventative maint parts and I'm working on doing all that. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but I'm a bit concerned about the age. I have a standard understanding of engines, but the little nuances of these vintage machines are what I'm worried about.

Joshua also in S.A.

I am having problems with gas leakage from a needle that screws into the side of the carb. I can't seem to get them to stop leaking gas. They leak especially when I "tickle" the carbs to prime them. Now I noticed the end of one of the needles is stripped, so the locking nut will not firmly seat. When I was able to get the bike running it seemed like a dog, I'm wondering if i'm flooding something. I could not get the bike to start last time i tried. I checked the floats and they are floating properly.

1) Are these needles suppossed to be screwed in until they stop?
2) How do I get these things to stop leaking gas all over the place?

I'm hoping Kurt from S.A. will chime in, he seems to always know what is wrong.

Thanks,

Kevin in Austin

Slingers (17 replies)

I've not had anything to do with /2 bikes before now. What's changed is the arrival of an R60/2 last week in my workshop, belonging to a guy who's imported it from Connecticut into New Zealand. He's not mechanical, and asked me to re-commission it for him. It came with no receipts, but the vendor gave a verbal assurance that (allegedly) the bike had recently had the last new crankshaft in the USA installed.

I've tried the search function, but evidently there hasn't been much discussion on the forum since the Great Boxerworks Meltdown of 2009. A Google search has revealed that some recommend the slingers getting cleaned at intervals ranging from 20,000mi to 40,000mi, while an entertaining story by Snowbum included the detail that he only cleaned the slingers on his R60/2 every 100,000mi whether they needed cleaning or not . . . any thoughts?

I drained the oil and it looked quite good (i.e. it wasn't black and there weren't any chunks of debris) and I checked the cylinder head torque, valve clearances, topped up the little oil reservoir on top of the rocker assemblies, unstuck one of the carb slides & sorted the floats, checked & cleaned the sparkplugs, tightened the sump bolts, repaired a stripped rocker cover centre stud thread, cleaned the air filter assembly, flushed the fuel tank and re-lubed the throttle twistgrip.

After checking for spark, I fitted the sparkplugs and gave it a few kicks before turning the ignition on. One kick and it fired up. Sounds sweet, no knocks, rattles or clunks. Next step is to change the gearbox, swingarm and bevel oils, check steering head, wheel and swingarm bearings, adjust brakes and go for a <s>fang</s> ride . . .

I'm interested in thoughts on slingers though. Comments?

The sell said that the carbs have been rebuild, coils replaced and it does start and run.

Not knowing much about /2 what would be a fair value of this bike?

Rotating vs non rotating valves. (6 replies)

As I can't guarantee the mileage on a recently aquired early 1962 R60/2, I'm doing the slingers and a general refresh on it. The more I delve into it, it appears to me, in my unqualified opinion that the 15000 miles on the clock might ring true. I pulled the top end off for a re & re and it has what I suspect are the original non rotating valves that are mentioned on Duane's site, one single long groove for the keeper, not two or three. They are withing spec, and the engine ran like a top when I pulled it apart. The heads look generally fine, no signs of distress. Is there actually anything wrong with these valves, is it better to replace them with the rotating type?

Weinmann rims (no replies)

I'm looking for a pair of nice condition Weinmann high lip alloy rims for my 1964 R69S. They don't need to be show quality just nicely presentable. I believe anything from '55 thru '59 are incorrect. Maybe Duane or someone else will chirp in on this. I couldn't get into the "Market" part here but I'll give Nathan a shout on Monday. Just figured someone out there might have one or a pair that they want to part with. Thanks..

R60/2 exhaust pipe nut (11 replies)

My recently purchased R60/2 had new headers put on by the p/o, but somehow- ham fist or a mfg defect, I don't know, he says the right hand nut split while he was installing it. Is there a fix for this? As the header is flanged, I can't see a way around it without cutting the flange, but nobody has ever accused me of being smart or ingenious. Maybe some sort of gasket arrangement like the system on a /5? Can replacement nuts even be had separately? It seems a real shame to have to replace the whole header.

R27 crankcase breather (6 replies)

Does anyone know how to service/clean the crancase breather on an R27? The Owner's manual and the BMW factory shop manual make no reference to it at all that I can find. The breather pipe itself appears to be press-fitted into the bottom of the front engine casing, so I don't want to muck around with it without talking to someone first. I've asked this question on both the VBMWO site and the Yahoo Mono Club site and gotten no responses, so maybe someone here can advise me. Thanks...
