My Version Of The Redmond Rally (10 replies)

This was my third or forth National Rally but Redmond was the best one I've attended so far. Yes, the weather was a little hot during the day but the location was very accessible and there were several places to get cool (I just hung out with the Airheads!), so all was well.

I departed Santa Rosa, CA for the rally on the morningof Monday the twelfth , with the intentions of riding up Rt 101 North to Eurica and then heading East but for some reason I started worrying about the bike and the time going by and panicked, so I turned West on Rt 20, cut around Clearlake and headed up through California's Central Valley to Shasta in 105 degree weather but thats what I get for deviating from my well laid plan!

Heres a shot of Mt Shasta. I just love this place!!

Tuesday was a better day all around. I made Medford OR by lunch time and then hit the blue highways that led me through a series of small towns, before passing through the National Forest, past Crater Lake and out onto RT 97 into Redmond. Interestingly enough, the residents of Oregon tend to keep to the speed limits whether a cop is around or not. That resulted in my having many, many opportunities to brush up on my passing skills!

I arrived in Redmond at about 6 PM. Just in time to help Oregon Air-marshal Garry Newby set up the Airhead's living room and tables and renew my acquaintances with the Florida contingent, led by Kevin and Stretch. Stretch rode from Florida on his R65/2 conversion that had a 9 gallon auxiliary tank on the back, while Kevin, who had masterminded saving my ass last year in Tennessee, rode across the country on a 50s era BMW 250 single!

Stretches R65/2 conversion in living color:

Heres a shot of Kevin servicing his little 250/2. The little bike had been converted to 12 volts using a /6 altenator and points unit and he said that it was faster in third gear than it was in forth and that he had to set the points 27 times before he reaches Colorado!

I can't move on without posting a shot of Garry Newby. Not only was he a great guy to hang out with but he was tireless in his efforts to make sure that the visiting Airhead contingent was well taken care of. Cajun Barry flew in to Portland and cooked two evening meals for us, while Gary made sure that we had plenty of (Very!) good beer, fresh water and in general kept the party under control. Thanks Garry!

As usual, the rally seemed to drag along, while it went by really quickly. I took the Adv Riders Course on Friday morning and then went to a few seminars in the afternoon. I learned more about Airhead mechanics, practiced basic Qui Gong, learned how to pick up a motorcycle without screwing up my back, ate $5 worth of vanilla ice cream and ended up back at Air Central holding down an overstuffed chair until dinner time.

Saturday was Bike Show Day and I got up early to get Crazy Horse cleaned up and polished.and then delivered it to the show with minutes to spare, hoping for a Blue Ribbon. Unfortunately, the organizer of the show was bereft of judges,so he had drafted one female senior Citizen who knew nothing about bikes, plus one 13 yo boy who knew even less. In the end they picked the bike with the shiniest paint.

When the smoke cleared a guy from Las Vegas who showed up at the last minute beat me with his unrestored, near mint, stock and original R90S. I was gutted, despondent, depressed and unhappy. I thought about selling my bike and starting over, I also considered suicide and I thought about finding that bike, so I could scratch the paint with my Boy Scout knife but in the end I realized that I had already won the Peoples Choice Award! All week people had been coming up to me and complementing me on the bike, giving me a thumbs-up or yelling “Nice Bike!” as I rode by or pestering me with questions about how I built it and exactly what it was built from, and that wasn't just at the rally either. The same thing happened at almost every gas station, restaurant or rest stop. People just love that little bike and I have come to accept the fact that I've successfully created a BMW that really touches people. As an artist, that's as great an accomplishment as any.

Here are a few random shots from the rally:

This is Mat Parkhouse's electric Beemer. Matt is the Airhead tech writer for the BMWMOA magazine:

G]

As always, the rally ended sooner than I wanted it to and Sunday morning I pack up early, said me goodbyes and hit the road, taking RT 5 West through the National Forest to Eugene. I had been warned that the road was treacherous but AI wasnt ready for the sight wen I came upon a police cruiser parked on my left, directly in front of a totaled Honda VFR that had become part of a tree. That was a bit sobering....

Anyway, next were the lava fields:

The mountains:

And the observatory:

Some Japanese kids took a picture of me in the parking lot and then took photos of each other standing next to my bike. Heres me!:

And in Eugene I ran into Reinhard Funck on his GS:

]

Reinhard and I rode south together for a couple of days and had a great time together. We "stealth camped" the forest at Diamond Lake:

and ran part of Crater Lake:

Before heading up into the mountains where we ran out of pavement at about 5K feet!

This was one of those situations where going down was a lot more challenging than going up and going backwards was notan option , so there I was riding me newly-finished cafe racer, down 10 miles of steep gravel road to get my a** off the mountain.

Lucky me... Not a scratch on the new bike!

We finally split up a Shasta, where I camped out for the night, while Rein headed for home. Reinhards a good guy to ride with and I know that we'll get together some time in the future.

That night I camped out at the Shasta KOA and in the morning I set out to cross the Trinity mountains on RT 17. It's a one lane road, mostly paved, that takes you all the way to the snow-line before running parallel to the trinity Ruver and falling back down to hook up with RT 99 west.

Yep! Thats the snow line!!

From there I rode 299 West to RT 101 and several hours later hit HWY-1 at the Pacific ocean:

Well, Thats all of the photos, so you're t going to have to take my word for the fact that two after that picture was taken, I was home again and in the shower. I rode 1680 miles total, the bike ran flawlessly, the camaraderie was first rate and I had a great time.

Now it's your turn!!!

It was time for son No. two, 13 yo Daniel's extended motorcycle adventure.
We were going North to briefly escape the southern winter.
The plan was to go north, maybe as far as Queensland.
Actually the only plan was to see Mal in Dubbo. Other than that there was no real plan except to hit the coast and follow it back down south.

We stayed at Mal's on night 2 and had a most enjoyable evening. Thank you Mal, Jo and kids for your hospitality.
We covered 3,544 kilometers in 11 days of riding, riding every day. The biggest day was about 550 k's bypassing Sydney. (sorry Ross)
What is concreted in my mind is just how beautiful my country is. The eastern coast of Australia is nothing less than spectacular with superb beaches, headlands, bays, estuarys and inlets and mountains that in many places extend right down to the coast.
There were a few nights spent camping at the beach just behind the coastal scrub which offered good protection from any wind.
The stars at night were extraordinary with a massive filthy smudge of cream made up of millions of far away stars.
The new moon was something to behold as it sat near the horizon. Just a sliver of white light at the bottom of the moon while the rest of the darkened moon was I presume, illuminated to a very dull reddish colour by the light reflecting of the earth.

Daniel and I were blessed with the weather in that we experienced almost no rain and mostly clear blue skies, although there had been plenty of rain up north in the days/weeks prior to our trip.
My old RS did me proud and required nothing more than fuel. A fair bit of it actually.
The only other bike I would have is another 507 RS in very good condition. One day.

Daniel has become an excellent pillion and no longer feels like a sack of potatoes on my back.
Perhaps the luggage formed armchair had something to do with it.

Here are a few of many photos taken to give you an idea of the trip,

Here we go again

A sub?? 400k's from the coast??

First night camping out

Evans Head

A closer look at Evans Head beach.
The beach is called 'air force beach' Couldn't get the 'ol ME 109 up to take off speed.

Salt water Kangaroos are more dangerous than freshwater ones.

I usually take one of these critters to do the dishes.

I set up the camera in the middle of the road for a shot. Number 63. Jeez - - how'd that happen? Took my traditional early morning birthday ride. Fired up the pretty green /6 and went out on the two-lanes for an hour or so. Sixty-five degrees, calm winds, cows and horses grazing in the pastures, roads pretty much to myself, and nary a cloud in the bright blue sky. Passed two Harleys. They waved. 750 ran perfectly and made beautiful music. Went through some of my favorite banked curves just so I could downshift, blip the throttle, and listen to the Hoskes. Back to the house to finish my coffee with the morning paper on the porch. Dinner with my wife and kids later. Son gave me a bottle of great small-batch bourbon. Maybe I should try calling Gina Lollobrigida. It's her birthday too...

I can`t recall the Company`s name right now. They offer whet looks like a nice R90s fairing . It`s not pre drilled. If one were to take care of what was going on I don`t think it would be too difficult to drill all the mounting holes yourself,no? How about the holes that mount the braces on the back of the fairing? What would you use to act as an insert to brace the mounting bolts to? On the stock fairing there`s a small brass female insert in there. Are they available ? At any rate ,what would be a good mounting fastener?
