Measuring fork slider wear .

Hi all, I have a 1983 g/s which has the front end clunk noise which has been discussed many times on forums online. I have tried all the possible fixes suggested other than fitting the last modification of fitting the mk3 damper internals which people have said is not a cure . Mine has the mk2 inter...

Re: Which O Ring?

If sourced from another supplier do you go for nitrile or vitron o rings for longevity? I am just in the process of buying new o rings from a local shop for a carb service. The cam shaft ones of course would not be in contact with petrol.

Re: Timing cannot be set accuratly.

Thanks for confirming that Barry, I was sure I had read it somewhere. I do have 2 pairs of old springs which I will check their lengths. Otherwise unless there is another source for closer spec springs I will probably stick with the newer springs if the don’t cause any engine problems. When riding I...

Re: Timing cannot be set accuratly.

Hi all. I have’nt come up with a definite reason for my problem seeing the timing marks but i did manage to adjust the can to get the fully advanced Z mark in the correct position , but the Z showing on low revs at idle is still perplexing . I did check the timing gun and its fine . The bike is on t...

Re: Timing cannot be set accuratly.

Hi , Sorry I forgot to add that I had connected the bean can shaft to a drill to test the advance weight as shown in the attached pic. ( The example in the pic is a scrap unit ) Anyway I think I might know the problem .I might of fitted the offset camshaft attachment ring shown in the pic , 180 deg ...

Re: Timing cannot be set accuratly.

Hi Rob, The strobe is a Gunson Tachostrobe ,old but it has worked ok in the past . It connects to the battery with 2 croc clips and signal wire / connector which attaches to the top of the spark plug and then the plug cap. The led hall tester is one I made years ago with a led bulb / resistor and 9v...

Re: Timing cannot be set accuratly.

Hi Rob, I have just connected the shaft of the bean can ( without the outer case ) so i can see the advance mech rotate at speed . The bob weights spin out and return back perfectly without any problem . On with the investigation !

Re: Timing cannot be set accuratly.

Hi All, thanks for your input. As you say it does seem to point towards an issue with the advance mech. I decided anyway to have a look at the alignment of the crank/ cam sprockets any they are fine , plus the cam sprocket wear which does’nt look too bad. I stripped down the bean can again and could...

Timing cannot be set accuratly.

Hi All, I have an problem setting the timing on my R80g/s and just wanted some advice before i start stripping any parts off. The bike has clocked 162000 mls which i think is relevant to issue. I have recently stripped the ignition bean can to check/clean/lube the advance unit and fit new springs .P...
