I don't think that it matters at all for how it runs. We always tilted them a bit for the reasons posted.

Your stumble can most likely be fixed without new parts.

In really tough cases with those slot bolts, we had to go to extreme lengths. We would put together several socket extensions to reach well back far enough to use our hand impact wrench. The extensions probably totaled 4 feet in length. Then we would have to rotate the flywheel to a certain position...

To have those fumes, you have something way wrong. Fix it.

That assertion is silly. No such program happened. I might know something about this as I built the second one in the USA back in 1967. A couple of hundred were built near Fresno by a guy named Willits or Willis.

Glad that you found it, congrats. Patience and research sometimes pays off. Few rider/owners seem to understand the why and how to adjust valves. I compare it to checking blood pressure.
