Re: Idle speed - clutch
I did ignore it, and it is still present but much less noticable. Quite likely it has always been like it is now - it's only the episode from last year that makes me pay attention. So what have I done? Nothing except put about 5000 miles on a new clutch friction plate.

Re: The least reliable component
I have used proper switch cleaner on the last few switches, it doesn't make any difference to the life. Anyway, that's not really the point - it's just a switch and I would expect many years trouble free operation with no attention (like every other japanese bike I've owned). I note Chasbmw has neve...

The least reliable component
is the front brake switch. They work normally for maybe 6 months, then they start to act up (I can hear arcing interfering with the radio - normally, but not always, when they are supposed to be on). Then with switch cleaner or WD40 etc. they will work for a few months more. Then they stop altogethe...

Re: Idle speed - clutch
OK, thanks Rob. I'll assume it's the thrust bearings and ignore it.

Re: Idle speed - clutch
Many thanks for the quick replies guys. My first thought was the ATU - it's fine. I hadn't considered the cables, but I checked last night - not that. I too wondered if it was normal behaviour but thought that would be uncharacteristic for BMW. From your responses I guess they don't all do it (and y...

Idle speed - clutch
R100RT. Does anyone know why the idle speed drops when I pull the clutch lever (doesn't matter whether it's in gear or not)? I changed the clutch thrust bearing thinking its the only thing that could be responsible (no difference), and checked the end float on the crankshaft - no discernable movemen...

Re: final drive leak while sitting in the cold
Mine always leaks when I ride in the cold - it has to be around freezing.

Replacing pushrod tubes
I need to replace a leaking pushrod tube on my '79 R100. Haynes just says push the old one out, I have tried in the past to move one, and they seem pretty immoveable. What's the technique, heat the barrel up in an oven and then press?

Re: Cylinder base oil leaks
Problem solved - the o ring got mashed during assembly. From the look of it, it somehow got tangled up around the exposed threads on the stud.

Re: Cylinder base oil leaks
OK, I'll reseal with 3 bond or similar. That's a good point about checking the oil flow before running the engine- I hadn't thought of that. I can't help thinking there is something fundamentally wrong with the arrangement if it's necessary to 'help' an o ring with gasket compound though. In every o...
