Thanks for all the advice! Checked all the connections, renewed the heat sink paste, cleaned out a massive amount of green copper corrosion from the coil towers and replaced the ignition unit. The ignition unit was the culprit. The input shaft was very stiff to turn. I've had this bike since 1984 an...

when I hit the kill switch the starter doesn't work, when the bike dies or looses spark, the starter still works, just no spark.

Here is an odd ball vibe that happened to me.
the cushdrive spring on the d/shaft broke. This allow the ramps in the assy to climb up & down the slopes causing a vibration at about 2500 to 3000 . I checked EVERYTHING at least three times before I found it

When I disassembled the bike for powder coating the frame, cleaned the engine, trans and rear end with laquer thinner and painted it with this:
