Re: 10 years later........
On the bearing subject... Many years ago, I had the same problem on a 'snowflake rear'. I found a local machine shop that was able to machine out the recess in the wheel and fit a steel insert. Worked perfectly till the bike (a R45) dropped an exhaust valve... (but it had done a couple of hundred mi...

Hamstring injuries are a real pain (Hah!). I hope Mrs H has a quick and successful recovery.

Re: R80 Mono Caliper Alignment V2.0
First point... BMW did mount single calipers on the right as well as on the left... not sure of the dates or models but, since all monos use the same components, it may even have been arbitrary dependant on what they had in stock at the time. There's no reason for it to make any difference. I would ...

Re: Deep Oil Pan
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the early centerstands will hit that. Absolutely correct... In fact I think that is why, in 1980, BMW moved away from the centre stand they had used from 1969, replacing it with the much weaker and wear prone stand that required a redesign around a year later (which didn't hel...

Re: Deep Oil Pan
The simple answer is, if it's a stock BMW pan from a later model, it won't fit or rather it will fit but the rearmost crossover will foul the pan. You can't 'just fit' a later main stand, the attachments are different and, in any case, you wouldn't want to. The later stand is not good. Certain after...

Re: 5 speed trans shimming
It does seen quite high but, if that's what it takes, then thats what you need to use. If you're completely satisfied with your measurements than go for it, but I would be inclined to do the math again just to check. That being said, if the shims are too thick, the gearbox will be tight once the cov...

Re: Fork Oil
The 'W' rating of fork oil is not actually very helpful, except in general terms. It describes the viscosity of a given oil at 0 degrees c and has little bearing on the performance at any other temperature. BMW recommended specific oils for forks varying between 2.5W and 10W with many that didn't qu...

Re: yes, yet another stuck fuel cap
Thanks Rob. I will keep on spraying penetrating oil into the lock. I have also tried the rope trick but nothing budged. I will try again & try to be braver. I have used the 'rope trick' but only on one occasion and yes, it did work. On that occasion, I was able to clean up the locking mechanism...

Re: yes, yet another stuck fuel cap
Don't know what you're 'best efforts' are but if you haven't done so, I would certainly try injecting a good releasing fluid or penetrating oil directly into the lock, then leave it for a week, possibly adding more fluid daily. It's worth trying to free the lock rather than risking destroying the ca...
