Re: Front Fork Seal Replacement 86 R65

Interesting... That would be the spacer ring 31 42 1 458 474... I'm pretty sure my R80RT (same forks) doesn't have them. They aren't shown on the BMW ETK (2002 and 2006 versions) Running a part number search on the part number gives no response. I can't actually see what they would achieve in the po...

Re: Toaster tank on a 1982 R80

I can say with some certainty that it won't be satisfactory without a lot of work. I'm not sure whether the central spine of the tank will clear the brake line manifold and the ECU, I don't think it will. There was a thread on this a few months ago and the consensus seemed to be that it wouldn't. Mi...

Re: 1987 R100RT overhaul

No need for an oil pan extension. The '87 models have a deep oil pan anyway. The extensions were produced mainly for the pre '80 machines which have a much shallower sump and arguably they gave some advantage... although it's debateable whether they are needed in temperate climates. If you want to r...

Re: 1987 R100RT overhaul

The bike is registered as a 1989 R100RT, but the serial number indicates it’s actually a 1987+ R100RT. Not unusual. vehicles frequently stayed 'in the system' for one or more years between date of manufacture and date of registration Can I remove the heads for cleaning and inspection without removi...

Re: 1972 R60/5 Won’t Start

The thing to be listening for is a click... in fact two clicks, one of which can be better refered to as a loud clack when the button is pressed. The clack is the starter solenoid slamming home and engaging the starter pinion as well as completeing the circuit between the battery and the starter. Th...

Re: REALITY VERSUS FANTASY: THOUGHTS ON SCRAMBLERS

I think we should, perhaps, leave people to ride what they want to ride and avoid making derogatory comments about their chosen 'style'.

Re: ‘86 R80RT Rear Shock

Might help? The eye mount on the top of your shock is screwed onto the chrome spindle of your schock. Compress the spring and you will be able to slide the tube thats against the eye mount down. Now you can clamp the spindle with a spindle clamp to unscrew the top eye mount. You need to heat it so ...

It's hard to tell but I agree it could be that. If it is, I dread to think what horrors await inside...

Re: Pieces of something in my oil sump. 1985 BMW R80RT

I agree with Steve... engine strip time. You need to find out where those bits came from and preferably what caused them to break off. It's also important to discover if there are any more bits in there waiting to cause you grief... It's possible that a PO has repaired some fault elsewhere and just ...

Re: Airbox "propellers".

Having an angled end to the tube causes the oil droplets to flow together and be drawn off more quickly... al least, that's always been my assumption.
