Re: R75/6 LED turn signals. Dash light won’t flash
Was the relay specifcally sold as suitable for a BMW Rxx/6 model? The flasher circuit is unusual and different to that on most contemporary vehicles including late (post 80) models of the airhead. I'm wondering (based on the packaging) whether this relay is intended for use on a vehicle with a trail...

Re: Spark plug shorting method for carb sync with EME digital ignition system
Not knowing the details of your points booster, I can't really comment but, if it's essentially substituting a semiconductor switch for the points (no matter how triggered)... as you say, the energy dissipated in the igniton system is dependant on the coils rather than the switching method so your ...

Re: Spark plug shorting method for carb sync with EME digital ignition system
There's no getting away from the fact that shorting will increase the HT current many times and while I've used the shorting method on my points booster electronic ignition without any adverse effects it does retain the original points coils which limits the energy being dissipated. Not knowing the...

Re: Spark plug shorting method for carb sync with EME digital ignition system
I would certainly not short the plug leads on electronic ignition although I've done it on points ignition including with my kit built ignition amplifier in place after noting that there are several blocking diodes in the electronic circuit to protect against a back emf and there is a condenser to ...

Re: Spark plug shorting method for carb sync with EME digital ignition system
I would be very reluctant to use plug shorting on any electronic ignition. With the plug lead shorted, there is a very intense and much higher current through the plug lead. This in turn means that the current in the primary of the coil will be higher and that the reverse EMF thorugh the coil could ...

Re: Camshafts. R45 cam in a R90!? 😳
But in any case the they are not the same cam as a type 247 equivalent because the shorter stroke of the type 248 changes the angle of the pushrods which changes the timing. Absolutely right. The effect of changing the angle between the pushrod and the camshaft will move the timing for one 'engine'...

Re: 90/6 ignition switch/key, and indicators
I think we need to be clear whether this is a /5 or a /6... with the caveat that, if it's a /5 then it isn't a R90 (always assuming it's a stock machine). The /6 was never fitted with the early headlamp assembly. If the machine is a /6 that has been retrofitted with a /5 headlamp (and this was somet...

Re: What is this under the tank R90/6
Yes, absolutely the voltage regulator... not the original but a BMW replacement part. The original would have been a metal can about 3 times as high as this unit and would be a mechanical regulator. This one is electronic and a little more efficient. The voltage regulator controls the output from th...

Re: '73 R75/5 LWB Rocker End Play Question?
All airheads up to 1985 were specified with 'no axial float but free to move'. You could probably interpret that as 'no measurable axial float but free to move'. For the earliest models there was/is a special tool to set the spacing between the rocker supports. If the (lack of) float can't be achiev...

Re: Pushrod towers leaking
You need to find where the oil is coming from... there are various possibilities up to and including rust holes in the tubes themselves... that being said, the likelihood is that the seals at the crankcase end have hardened and started to deform. It's amazing that they have lasted tor 40 odd years w...
