Re: 1978 R100S ignition timing issue
I'm going to chime in because I had a very similar problem setting new BMW points a few years ago. Kurt already mentioned that they could be bogus and they very well could be. I think it was 4 or 5 years ago that BMW out-sourced them and they had about an extra 1.5mm length to the fiber board which ...

Re: Low Cost GPS
That's the way I prefer to run too, but when you have to go into a big unfamiliar city on a hot day trying to find a business, with a very short memory, the GPS has it's advantages. I'm old!Garnet wrote:My GPS:

Low Cost GPS
Hi All, I'm looking for a decent used, weatherproof, basic GPS for hwy and city navigation in the US for the budget minded (poor) airhead rider. I like the looks of the Garmin 2720, but don't know anything about it. If you can offer suggestions on makes and models to look for in the $100ish range us...

That little book stays on my bike wherever I go. I was on the side of the road on a hot afternoon thirsty for beer. I had lost all power and that little book helped me make it to the beer garden at a rally before closing. I say it's worth every penny when your stranded.

Re: Wear showing on Nikasil cylinders
I had an '81 R100 Nikasil cylinder with a few spots that had lifted and was told that BMW had adhesion issues on the earlier cylinders. I looked into replating and diamond honing, but it was more expensive than finding a good used one. I would look for '83 on up cylinders.

Re: Walnut shell or soda blasting a wheel
I soda blasted a set of snow flakes for my S bike and thought it worked great. A lot safer than bead blast and it didn't seem to hurt the lawn. Harbor freight sells bulk soda bags for cheap and Napa sells a nifty gun with a pot that looks like a paint gun for around $50US. The gun is more expensive ...

On my screen the gear looks very serviceable. If it's just minor surface pits I would clean it up an reuse it.

Re: Today, a bit sad and depressed about my airhead
If you want to ride it now without doing a proper fix you can put a small tapered pipe plug in it to seal it.
