Re: Daytona Orange perfection

Chuey, I've been planning a respray / repaint of my 1975 R90S once all the mechanical work is done. I have completely restored the bike. It is now ready for paint! I have not spoken to them for some time but Holt BMW in Ohio will sell the correct Daytona orange and silver? Pearl paint as well. That ...

Re: New Guy with a Project bike.

I may have missed it, has anyone suggested checking the coils? Coils do age and of course a carbon track or crack in the coils will cause them to fail completely. And of course these are two 6v coils wired in series. You can test the coils by checking their internal resistance with the coils complet...

Re: bent forks R75/5

I installed a set of forks from Motobins that are made in Italy. I've had them on my R90S for about two years. They were pretty expensive and are beautifully finished and dead straight. I just checked and it appears Motobins no longer offers forks for airheads.

Re: Clutch/ gearbox rattle

Pattern, Can you describe the clacking a bit more? I assume it's not a metal on metal scraping sound? More of a rattling? The lack of felt on the push rod will allow it to rattle but I'd expect it to quiet down a lot when you pull in the clutch. How old is the clutch disc or diaphragm spring? I'm wo...

Re: R90s horn repair

Rick, At the risk of sounding like a jerk, I'd suggest purchasing two horns to replace the single on the R90S. This will require the addition of a relay in the circuit. I've done this on my '75 R90S because two "Fiamm like" horns are inexpensive and two horns are much louder than the singl...

Re: A guy walked into a bar...

I agree with Major Softie (of course). Another cause of brake goo is using the incorrect DOT rating. DOT 4, right?

And, yet another brake goo challenge comes from the fluid not being refreshed every year.

Re: 73 R60/5 Ignition trouble...Please Help!!

Toaster1988, Have you checked to see if the front cover you removed to access the points and condenser is grounding the points lead? This is a common situation where you replace the points and condenser and then when tightening down the front cover, the points lead gets crushed against the case with...

Re: Electrical tools question:

Chuey, I use a Sears, "Craftsman Professional Dual Heat Soldering Gun". This soldering gun heats up very quickly and must be used with caution on delicate jobs as it will cook a printed circuit board quickly. I also have a few Weller soldering pencils which I use for very delicate jobs whe...

Shim plate also holds the shafts in place laterally

Garnet, The shim plate also holds the shafts in place so they remain square. The desired nominal gap is 0.002" or 0.05mm. If measuring the shim gap without reassembling the cases, keeping the shafts straight ensures a better measurement. When we're talking about 0.002" clearance, that can ...

Re: List of parts for tranny rebuild

Don, Six bearings in all (one on each end of: input, layshaft and output), flange seal, output shaft seal, case gasket and a few o-rings plus several shift mechanism plastic bits and the return spring in for the shift mechanism. A great source of parts and tools is Dan at http://www.cycleworks.net D...
