But, the original cam chain tensioners were also known to be slack. When you get your new tensioner spring you'll see that the latest model spring is much stronger.
After 20 years as a professional bike mechanic and 30 years as an engineer I know just enough to be dangerous !

I think my tensioner still has the stock spring. I do believe tho that the oil behind the piston is the real player in resisting the pulses of the chain. It acts like a damper.
I've thought for a while that maybe my piston is longer, modified/experiment for racing to restrict how far the chain can push out.
I dunno, but I know I couldn't push the piston all the way into the bore, like I can with my old front bearing carrier.
The front was all buttoned up before finding this difference. I'll know for sure next time I'm in there.
