R80/7 Front End to GSXR Conversion Advice

Post by Marcus OBeard »

Hi All,

My BMW R80/7 has notoriously poor braking (single front rotor configuration). I've been reading about all of the options on here to improve this with regard to changing master cylinder, and adding second rotor form R100 front end fork. This forum is a wealth of information on these solutions. :D

However, I've decided to go the slightly more complicated route of changing the entire front end for a GSXR front end. I've even ordered a set of used gold forks on Ebay for a '06 GSXR 600. Exciting stuff, even though I have very little clue what I'm doing. I have so many questions and this is very uncharted territory for me, so wondering if anyone on here has made this conversion already and do you have any advice for me?

This is my plan for now, unless someone suggests otherwise.
For the tripple clamp I'm planning on buying the awesome (and expensive) Cognito Moto kit for this conversion. No idea if I'm going to get 30deg or higher - any recommendations?
For the brake rotors I'll likely buy new, unless I can buy a used rim off ebay with rotors that look reasonably ok. I don't really like the rims for the GSXR so if anyone has any advice on a spoked rim that would fit, let me know.

Will add more questions as I go along, but please feel free to jump in way ANY advice.

      :D

I saw this at the bike show in NYC in 2017.
Took a bunch of custom machining to accomplish.
Obviously a stock front BMW wheel with an adapter for the rotors.
Probably needed to machine down the axle. Doubt bearing that would fit that axle would fit the wheel.
      Don't know any other details.

I think he's one of us! I haven't seen him here in a bit, though. mattcfish if I remember correctly.
Call me Mel. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would ride about a little and see the other parts of the world.
