Hi all,
I'm restoring a '79 R80/7 (65k miles) and took the rear wheel and swing arm apart today to see how much work is needed. I've got some photos of the rear wheel and drive spline, as well as the swing arm. It's my first restoration so not really sure how these stack up compared to other bikes of its age and mileage. Looked like the oil hadn't been changed in a long time. Could people please have a look and let me know if you see any problems here?
Thanks for your help.

Re: R80/7 Rear Wheel and Drive Spline advice
My assesment from these photos would be:
1) The drive shaft to final drive splines are fine. They seldom give problems and I can see no signs of excessive wear here.
2) The wheel splines appear worn but serviceable. I would say there are many more miles left in them.
3) The final drive to wheel splines look pretty good and I would say there's no problem there.
With the wheel aplines (both sides) the indicator is the flat area at the 'top' of each spline. If the flat area disappears, then the splines are worn to the point of being unusable. For preference they should be replaced before this point is reached.
I would recommend that you clean off as much of the old grease as you can and replace it with with a good spline grease... that done, I don't think you'll have any problems from this source at least for some time.
