Hello All,
I had the frame powder-coated on my '84 R100, and am putting it back together. After I put the wire harness back on, I noticed there seems to be a wire missing from the starter motor. I have the thick black wire from the battery positive, and a red wire, going to the right-side lug of the starter motor. But, I have an empty spade terminal on the left side of the starter motor.
I took lots of pics of where things go, but can't make out if there was a wire on that terminal or not. Obviously I missed it, and cannot find a black wire like the one called out in the wiring diagram. So now when I push the starter button, the starter relay clicks, but the starter motor does not energize.
Can someone enlighten me?
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Am I missing a starter wire?
I don't know what the "right side lug" of the starter motor is. But according to the diagram, it should be like this:
- terminal 30 has two wires...large black wire to battery + and a red wire to terminal B+ on the diode board
- terminal 50 has a smaller black wire to terminal 30 on the starter relay

Sorry, I was referring to if you were on the bike, the threaded lug is on the right side of the bike. Then the spade terminal is on the left side of the bike. I have a wiring diagram, but it does not have numbers on it.
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Am I missing a starter wire?
Sorry, I don't really know the orientation of the starter...the starter nose gear is in the rear, but I really don't know which terminal goes where...I've never been that intimate with my starter. Here's a B&W picture of a diagram with numbers on it which reflect what I posted:
http://www.powerboxer.de/images/stories ... plan_e.gif
Item 21 is the starter, 25 is the diode board, 17 the starter relay. The wire to the diode board has nothing to do with engaging the starter. All it does is feed power back to the battery for charging. If you have the big black wire, probably on the screwed lug terminal, then the other black wire has to go to the other terminal on the starter.
Here's a pictorial on a Bosch rebuild...I see some stamped numbers on the solenoid:

Good info on wiring in the starter section on this page (note it is a Valeo):

Re: Am I missing a starter wire?
I've been looking for a picture of the contact end of the starter solenoid and I found one but it's rubbish, I had ro use a magnifying glass to make anything out so a scan would be pretty useless... so I'll try to describe what should be there... I'm really only repeating what's been said but I'll try to clarify a bit.
There are three terminals on the contact end of the solenoid, two large copper threaded terminals... 8mm if memory serves. One is close to the body of the motor. The other is farther away. There is also one male lucar or spade connector.
The threaded terminal closer to the motor only takes a braided cable that disappears into the body of the starter motor.
The threaded terminal further from the motor takes a two connections, thick black cable, the main battery terminal, and a second red cable, thinner but still pretty thick. This goes to the diode board.
The lucar terminal makes a cable that emerges from the main loom and in fact comes from the starter relay. This is normally black.

Re: Am I missing a starter wire?
Thank you both, Kurt and Rob. Based on what you guys told me, I hunted around, removed the diode board, and found the black wire behind the diode board. So it must have fallen down there during all my pushing and pulling. I fed it back up to where it belongs, attached it and now everything works!
Thanks again,
Steve
