R100 RS mirrors

Post by daniel »

Hi I finally managed to acquire a lovely 1983 R100 RS after eating one since they first came out. I can't see much other the my arms i the rearview mirrors. Searches for a extension have turned out blank apart for some old 2010 threads on this forum where I also reach a dead end. HAs anyone ay reet experience? I really like to keep the look as original as possible but it needs to be safe to ride.

If it has the original small angular mirrors, the larger heads that were fitted to the 'RT series are an improvement and don't look too out of place on tyhe 'RS fairing. Still not briliant but definitely better..

By the way... what did it taste like ;)

The mirrors aren't perfect are they, but after riding a RS for a few decades I doubt they're unsafe.
Some people do prefer them to be wider though and so at one stage there was an extension available to move the mirror out about 3cm.
The other alternative is to take a mirror to a m/c wrecker and look thru their box of mirrors to find a set that has the same bolt setup. They do exist. I think the ones on the grey ghost are from a zxr750, year unknown.

I have tried the later mono lever version. They're slightly squarer, but made no difference to my riding habits or rear visibility.

Alternatively, ride the bike for a while, acclimatize to it and see if it really matters.

I have these on my 77RS

http://www.discount-motorcycle-parts.ne ... -1674.html

I bought a second set of mounts because I always want to go back to stock.
Note these mounts are black and the stock ones are the paint color.
Had to drill them out, as the mirror mounts are 10mm.
Drill slowly, as the heat melts the plastic mount and the thread insert can spin.
After drilling them out, I inserted a 10mm nut from underneath. Tapping the original insert would be better.
At higher speeds (around 80mph) they flutter a bit. Below that, they are reasonably stable.
Sometimes, the one on the left gets loose because of the wind pushing on it.

All in all, I'm happy with the mirror swap. I can see behind me very well.
