I don't think the breather is an issue either since my last test had the air tubes removed, so I don't think the oil mist would have even got to the right carb.

I'll report back what I find.
That's a prttey definitive test of that theory then... :)

I was surprised how much the air intake tubes affected how a bike can run. I was helping a guy resolve some hesitation issues with his R51/3. We were in/out of the carb dealing with needle changes...of course simple to do. We'd make the change, leave in the tubes off, and he'd head out for a test run. Every time he'd come back and say it was still there. With nothing left to do and figured we'd try again another day, we put the air tubes back on and he took one more spin...bike was perfect! The tubes help meter the air coming thru the filter into the carb throats. I'll have to remember that one!

I think I got it figured out. The right side Dellorto had two air leaks as revealed by spraying carb cleaner around the intake manifold area and the choke cover with the engine running. I sealed both areas, and went for a long ride and idle is silky smooth and consistent again.

Oh, and my float level was way off also on the right carb.

In troubleshooting I checked for sticking valves, compression (175 right side, 185 left side).
I also changed the breather orientation to point towards 11 o'clock, although I can't believe this has any effect.

Thanks for your help Rob and Kurt.
