Problem with connecting my side stand

Post by thenoisyshore »

I just purchased my 74' R90/6. My side stand is not attached to the bike but i am able to place it onto the frame where i believe it is supposed to be located, however the stand lines up flush with the frame and i have no way of connecting the stand with a bolt or secure it in any way. I'm not sure if i am totally mussing something here and apologize for the vague description but i would love if anyone could give me some insight on this issue. Thank you!

The stock stand fits on a post that's part of the left front engine mounting lug. As I recall, you need to pull the front engine mounting stud and tilt the motor up to get the stand on.
Call me Mel. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would ride about a little and see the other parts of the world.

As Melville has said, the stand should slide on to a post or peg built into the left front engine mounting lug on the frame. Reading your post, it sounds to me as though someone might have cut the relevant post off. It's a round post about an inch and half long and about 3/4 inch in diameter (dimensions are guestimates, I haven't looked at one for some time). It protrudes at an angle back from the frame towards the engine. The stand is held in place by a shaped steel plate that is mounted on the engine mounting stud.

Again as Melville says, it isn't possible to fit the stand without moving the engine.

just wanted to add that the post that the stock side-stand rotates on, is welded in place from the factory. Often times, the weld (a smallish spot weld), breaks and the post can dis-lodge. This happened to my '74 R90s after about 100,000 miles.

New posts are available. It should be BMW p/n 46 51 1 231 233
