Oil Soaked Brake Shoes

Hey All,
Long time since I have been here. I'm in the process of a Top and Bottom, and Clutch rebuild on my R90S. Just removed the rear wheel and find the brake shoes are oil soaked. Think I know the answer but thought I would ask here anyway. Can the shoe's be cleaned and reused or are they GONE ?

In the first post in this thread, Curt Henry thought that with some brake cleaner and sanding might bring them back. Of course in this situation, it was about trying to help a rider on the road in order to keep him moving.

I wonder if that's a good practice when the situation is like yours. Seems like the question would always be in the back of the mind...do the brakes still work? Then again, a good 70% of braking is done by the front disks.

I've had this bike over 30 years and the back brakes have ALWAYS sucked. But now I have a MUCH bigger problem. I took the cover plate off and separated the ring gear from the pinion and I see that there is a broken tooth on the ring gear and several bad teeth on the pinion gear, again this has been like this for MANY years because when I would change the gear oil I would see tooth pieces on the magnetic plug. Guess it's time to look for another 33/11 final drive. I see there is a 32/10 drive on ebay. Wonder if that one would work on a R90S?

I would try to find the same gear ratio. Currently you have 3.0 ratio, the 32/10 would give you a 3.2 ratio. That would improve acceleration, but reduce top end and milage. Maybe having your unit rebuilt is also an option.

Ouch I should think a new set of brake shoes is the least of your worries with that damage to the final drive... been there and got the tee shirt... fortunately for me, I had a spare drive which I could recommission (New wheel splines needed). Sourcing a replacement drive is really the only way forward, a rebuild would need the replacement of both gears so it's unlikely to be as cost effective.

Going back to the brake shoes... you can get cleaner but it sounds like your shoes have been soaked with oil for some time and it will have impregnated the linings. I would not expect brake cleaner to be effective and I think the only viable solution is new shoes.

Go to Windows...use the Paint App...open the file and click on Resize, click on Pixels, and put 1024 in the first box...the second box will automatically adjust with aspect ratio checked. Save file to new name. Upload the new file.

Try your upload again, the board was limiting max file size to 256 KB. I changed it to 512 KB.

Or use a picture hosting site. I use ImgBB. You upload the image to the site and add the provided link... like this...



No limit to image size, no limit to the number of links you can put in a post and free as long as you don't exceed your total upload limit.
