Antisieze or Loctite

Post by Zombie Master »

I know they're not the same, but I've used them both for the same reasons: (Thread lock = Loctite)

Protecting threads from rust and corrosion, and to make sure I can remove assemblies easily in the future.

I'm not fond of the way Thread locked fasteners feel when you remove them. :(

You can chase them, but they always feel sticky to me, coming out or going in.

I find it a PIA to clean threads that have been Thread locked. But it does work :)

Takes some joy out of the process though.

My KTM requires thread lock on many fasteners.

I like to use copper and nickle anti seize.

In Thread lock I have low strength, med strength, Oil resistant (Specified by KTM #243) and Permanent. I read there is a new orange product that is strong as red (permanent) but comes off like blue (med). I'm very excited about this :P

I am easily amused.

If I don't have a torque spec for a fastener specifically for lubricated or thread locked fasteners, I reduce the tightening torque. :geek:

Any thoughts?

They are very different things. I essence, anti-seize makes sure you can get things apart when you want to, thread lock ensures that things don't come apart when you don't want them to. Anti seize won't stop a fastener from working loose. Thread lock won't stop a fastener from seizing, corroding or galling. It isn't a good idea to use one insted of the other, each has it's place.

Neither thread lock or antiseize should effect the specified torque setting for a particular fastening.

Maybe not the specified torque, but it does affect the value you target on your torque wrench, right? If a fastener requires 25 ft-lbs and has antiseize or even has oil on the threads, the target torque should be 20-25% lower than specified.

I use the blue loctite quite a bit. I rarely coat the threads though, preferring to just add a dab or two. I don't get too fussy about exact torque, close enough just under specified is enough. Haven't lost one yet ....
