Toaster tank on a 1982 R80

Post by John »

Hi,

I would like to fit a '70s toaster tank on my 1982 R80RT; does it fit, are any modifications to frame or tank required?

Are the Indian replica tanks any good?

thanks!

I seriously doubt that a /5 tank will fit the 1982 bike...others will know. Here's a thread on another vintage forum where someone looked into the tank from India.

I can say with some certainty that it won't be satisfactory without a lot of work.

I'm not sure whether the central spine of the tank will clear the brake line manifold and the ECU, I don't think it will. There was a thread on this a few months ago and the consensus seemed to be that it wouldn't. Might be worth looking that thread up and possibly contacting the author to see if he ever got a definitive answer.

What I am sure of is that there will be a gap of around 2 inches between the rear of the tank and the front of the seat. The /7 and later tank is longer than the earlier ones and the seat is accordingly shorter. You could, of course, fit a /6 or /5 seat but I think you will have issues with hinges... etc.

To put it another way... If you have money to burn or are willing and able to do a considerable amount of 'engineering' work, I daresay it could be achieved but it certainly isn't a bolt up job.

thanks! I'll stick with the original tank then and save a lot of time and money in the process...
