New style RMS installation...

Post by dougie »

If someone has done it, any tips would be appreciated.
The inner membrane is like something I have never seen before. It has to bend either in or out to be open enough for the big thrust washer to fit.
Is the seal installed like a regular one, i.e. open side inboard? Then followed by installing the thrust washer?
I've spent most of my money on women, motorcycles, and beer.
The rest of it I just wasted.

Thrust washer is in before the seal. It mounts on dowels on the crank shaft. Make sure it does not come off the dowels during reassembly. The "new" main seals are made of Teflon and are quite stiff. They "bend" inward and seal against the flywheel boss when it is reinstalled. Special care is required to make sure the seal is pressed in evenly and at the correct depth. There's a recent thread on the procedure discussing whether to pound it in or use an easily made tool to press it in with the flywheel bolts. http://boxerworks.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1083

My mistake Matt. I meant the "guide ring" goes in after the seal (#5 below). I can see the thrust washer is still on the dowels.

I found this picture of the seal for an 1150GS. Look about right?

I am confused, the part #5 looks like a flywheel to me. What am I missing? I don't know this guide ring part. Help me remember it.

The guide ring is from 1981 on, when the flywheel was changed (lightened).

Oh, no wonder, as I have never seen a flywheel off one of those "new bikes" :-)

Good, I am not into dementia just yet......... or at least that wasn't evidence of it.

Yes the seal goes in with the pictured side out. The "guide ring" takes the place of the flywheel "boss" on post 81 bikes.
