Old screen painted a "Satin Black"

G'day fellas,

I got an older cut down screen off SteveD today in the post for my RS, I have had a uglyish aftermarket tall one on mine from the PO for a good few years now and even after I cut it down low, the way it was made the side panels are still to tall so SteveD gave me his old original RS screen and it is low, so hopefully the wind/head buffeting will be all good now as I have rode steve's bike with the one he has in place now and it was so much more quiet than mine.....

I have always liked the look of some European RS police bikes with the matt black screen so guess what I done with this old screen, you guessed it and here are some pix....(I am a few plastic lugs short and that will be fixed tomorrow)









the paint was a pressure can very quick drying "Satin Black" plastic bumper paint, I have used it on the inside of the fairing and side covers for years, it wears bloody well and is super easy to touch up with...

Then I had one.
Then I had none.
Now I have a IPF 100 watt.

I have a beater spare screen and always thought a tinted/darkened screen would be cool on my RS so a few questions...

Did you spray outside or inside screen?

Any reaction between the plastic (?) in the screen and the paint? I have a satin finish black spray bomb on the shelf just wondering if it is compatible with the screen material. Its labelled as "bumper" paint. Also have a spay can of flat Krylon Fusion paint for plastic..just wondering.

Looks like your screen was cut down at the area eliminating the "flip". Let us know how it woks re: buffeting. I actually put an additonal "flipper" on my old screen for a test and it really knocked the buffeting down and off my throat area..see if I can get a pic of it. Made it from an old helmet face sheild.

The lower screen makes a world of difference to the buffeting around the helmet, therefore the noise is markedly reduced and the ride is more enjoyable.

Most try the taller screen, as I did, but it wasn't tall enough and I didn't like the look of it anyhow.

The screen Grant has was cut down gradually to the height that suited me (6ft 1") The trick is to have the air flow from the top of the screen to be quiet below the helmet. Leaving the helmet in the airstream has it in "cleaner" air, for want of a better term. Turbulence at the helmet is negated.



My current screen is 1 cm closer to my chin than this one, but has a very dark tint.

Painted on the outside, why the outside you say, because there were a few scratches on the screen which I wanted to cover and I like the look of the "satin finish"....
On the pressure can I used it said "For plastic bumpers and trim", it didn't say perspex and I did not prime or scuff it up at all before I painted it, just a good clean and then lots of light coats of paint and this stuff dries very quickly and at the end of the day if it does mark at all over time then it's a 5 minute job to repaint....

I know that it will be quiet as I have ridden SteveD's RS which has a low screen and it was lovely with no excessive wind noise in the helmet...
My old screen that I just took off was a "touring" aftermarket screen with a flip up lip and with me being 6ft1" it was a PITA so I cut the flip off and it still was a PITA because but the side area of the screen was a lot taller than these original BMW screens and I couldn't cut it down any lower....Hope that made sense....
