Nice to meet you all! I'm new here but haven't posted because I keep finding solutions to my questions! Thanks! So here's my current concern: Last year in Oct. I was rear ended by a Dodge Durango. Thankfully I wasn't hurt that bad. Only a little stiff for a few days.
When he hit me he pushed the seat forward causing the seat latch post to break off. I was taken to the emergency room for observation so I didn't have a chance to collect all the parts that flew off and got lost by the tow truck person. At least they didn't take my tool roll this time, : ).
Is there some sort of fix for that seat post latch? The pan isn't in bad shape. The grab rail is pushed forward but I'll probably take it off. Honestly, after being hit like that I'm not crazy about taking a passenger.
If not I'm seriously considering buying the Police seat #52 16 600 on the Eurotech Motorsports site for $200. Anyone have any experience with that seat? I don't see that forward hinge assembly anywhere...

OUCH!
Welcome aboard and deep condolance ( Sorry I can't spell, but Rob will come along and translate for you) on your /6.
Was there much else buggered? Looks like you might need a subframe and maybe a new rear wheel.
Motobins have a pretty good price on aftermarket solo seats as well.

Double ouch!
At least he was stopping! I hope his radiator started leaking!
Re: the seat, the post can be bought separately from Motobins, but you could also consider the lift off version described at Duane's http://w6rec.com/duane/bmw/seatmod/index.htm

Thats what you get for installing that reverse gear in your bike. You gotta watch where you are backing:-)
I will bet that the main frame is bent up. That is totally a total. Don't spend a cent until you get a full appraisal.
I hope that his insurance has to pay big time for that one.

Wow, that's some oowee! Looks like you were hit hard enough that the knee pads and headlight ring flew off as well. Any damage to the backside of the tank?

I had been sitting at a four lane intersection with a green light waiting to turn left. A block away from my house going home to let the dogs out for lunch. Beautiful Iowa fall day. I had been stopped for about 20 seconds, all lights working then. The Durango hit his brakes right before he hit me. The speed limit is 35mph. I was pushed forward about 20 feet. I went up onto the hood of his truck and off to the side into oncoming traffic. No helmet. I'll wear one now though. I was stiff for a few days, other than that I'm fine.
I've had the bike since '89. It's a '74 R90/6. That thing is a tractor. Right now it's apart in my basement. Of course it started fine. I put it in gear and ran it with the swingarm on a stand. It didn't make any more noise than it did before. The back wheel looks straight, didn't wobble. The subframe was pushed forward a bit. The wheel and swingarm were pushed down under his bumper but not so far that anything was broken. The shocks, fender and subframe are ruined. The seat pushed forward and scuffed the tank. Exhaust is fine. His fender pushed between the subframe and the rear wheel. More of his front end gave than my bike.
I suppose I'm naive but I bought the thing back for $500. Geico gave me $3000 for it so I came away with $2500. I haven't settled the physical injury part yet. So, I'll put Humpty back together again. If nothing else I have a lot of parts to swap over if I have to buy another bike.
I bought a subframe, shocks, headlight and ring, fender, rear lights and new tires I needed anyway. She's going to be a little mad max. I see on the motobins page I can buy the seat latch post by itself, thanks Garnet!
Even if it isn't completely right I love working on that motorcycle. I've loved it since the day I bought it. It's so well made compared to the bikes I owned before that one. It's therapy for me to sit down there and take it apart and put it together. These days so many things are poorly made and disposable. This is solid quality, but I'm preaching to the choir. I don't consider it a waste of time if I end up getting another one and end up maintaining that one too. These long Iowa winters you know.

Hey Garnet, when I was in the Navy on a submarine we stopped in Victoria on our way to Nanaimo. Victoria is one of the most beautiful places we went. I went with a friend to a friend of his Aunt's and had a delicious home cooked meal near there. They drink High Test right? They gave us the best ice cream when we loaded stores.

Re: Seat latch post
Well, they don't make cars the way they used to... thankfully.
Glad you're Ok and the bike is repairable... but... I'd second the post about having the frame checked. Totally different scenario but... When I had a close encounter of the Renault kind on my 'RS, the frame looked OK... but... a check by an expert revealed the head stock was out enough to move the front wheel about 3/4 inch sideways. It doesn't take much...
Good luck
Rob
