Balance marks on post 81 clutch

The block is stripped, the 336 cam is installed, new timing sprockets and chain in place, Siebenrock 1000 cc Nikasils and pistons coming up. Dual plugging in progress. I'm switching to a post 81 clutch and tranny. I'm installing a good used clutch

Please dont take this as a slight against your mechanical ability or decision, but why after putting all this really good and expencive stuff in(wait I could have answered my own question here) are you putting a used clutch in your bike? Sorry for the question, but I just gotta ask.

Boy I wish you could have made that statement to me 12 months ago when the centre on my clutch on the R65 torn out going up a huge hill. I could have had a great conversation on this topic. thought it was the gearbox, but turn out to be a stripped centre spline.

Mine is............so far.
What did your gearbox input spline look like?
I haven't heard of many people on the forum stripping a spline.

The input spline was fine. Just the cetre spline teeth I guess you call them in the clutch were stripped. Must be something that happens cause my BMW mechanic put it on the top of his list of things it could have been before he opened it up.

My understanding is that the paint marks were only put on when the part out of balance beyond a certain amount but not out of spec. The intention being that any out of balance parts were arranged with paint marks at different points on the circumference. If the parts have no marks, they have been checked and found to be within the spec so they can be assembled any way. Problems would only arise if three marked parts are assembled with all three marks in the same place.

That being said, I think the problem here is knowing for sure if these are factory marks or if they are marks applied by a PO. If the latter, then it is highly likely that they are intended to be assembled with all of marks in the same place.

On the other hand... if thats the case and there are no factory marks, they should be fine which every way you assemble them...

I had the rivets holding the centre hub of the disc pull out on, of all things, my R26, with it's blistering 15 HP.

A good point. There is no way to know how to read the marks with out some kind of check. The last clutch/flywheel balancing I had done, the machinist left marks that were to be lined up for assembly.
