I've installed duplex timing chains twice before and got the clip for the master link in relatively easily. I must have been lucky because it's not so easy this time.
Last night I spent more time looking for the dropped clip than actually attempting to get it on the chain. Maybe it was the cold hands and lack of sleep, but I had to call it quits without finishing the job.
I'll try again tonight with grease and magnets. Anybody want to share their secrets for getting these things in place?
I don't want to hear about simplex chains. Those are way easier because the clip is on the front side of the chain.

Re: Pesky duplex timing chain clip
It's a Zen thing.
The last two chains I've done have had TWO freaken little circlips, just to make it extra hard. Sometimes they just go click, sometimes they just disapear.
You did the right thing, try a few times and then walk away and do something else and try again later.

Can't help Matt. Grease and magnets tells me you are way trickier than me.mattcfish wrote:I'll try again tonight with grease and magnets. Anybody want to share their secrets for getting these things in place?
I've spent most of my money on women, motorcycles, and beer.
The rest of it I just wasted.

Haemostats (Hemostats, Roachclip) made the job very quick for me.

Come to think of it, I think that's what I used before. Now if I could only figure out where they are.dwerbil wrote:Yes, YES!! The perfect tool for the that dreaded clip.Airbear wrote:Haemostats (Hemostats, Roachclip) made the job very quick for me.

Hmm...I'm seeing a small market in used artery forceps opening up here!
Place your orders, if you want one, used of course and designed for single clinical use only. I'll even clean the protein off!
No guarantee on when one is available, but they will be occasionally and for the price of P&P ....

Re: Pesky duplex timing chain clip
Got it in! The real problem was that I was using the wrong master link. The one I was using was a Mercedes link I had ordered a long time ago. The link that came with the airhead chain was still in the box. It had slightly longer posts that allowed the keeper grooves to be exposed. The Mercedes link was a hair short on the posts. No matter how I pushed the master clip would not go over the ends....instead it would go flying across the room. I found that using hemostats and dipping the clip in heavy grease simplified the job even more. The grease makes the clip stick to things, so if you drop it it doesn't go far.mattcfish wrote:Come to think of it, I think that's what I used before. Amazing.
If I had ordered a master link for something a long time ago, I would never be able to find it, much less let it confuse me!
