Transmission oil transfer.

Post by SteveD »

11/1981 R100RS.

I'm seeing oil transfer from the FD to the gearbox.

I start with oil volume a tad under spec, eg g'box 775ml(800), shaft 135ml (150), final drive 325ml (350).

Within 2000ks I'm draining 900ml from the trans, putting 75 back into the final drive, and 50 into the shaft.

Trans breather and fd breather are not blocked. The rear shocks are Koni's and work well.

The final drive is a second hand one I sourced. This didn't happen on the previous fd.

What should I be checking?

Thanks.

Have your recently replaced the transmission output shaft seal? If it is in backwards, the oil moves forward into the transmission.
Ask the Indians what happens when you don't control immigration.

Nope. Untouched since a rebuild of the gearbox over 5 years back. The fd is 2nd hand, and was put on last year.

What are the chances that this seal can fail after 5-7 years?
