R100RS Wiring issues . . .

Post by B441 »

Hello, I have a 1988 R100RS that shorted out near the clock and toasted the wiring harness from the dash down to the main. No fuse ever blew. The upper dash wiring harness is available from BMW but the main harness is not made anymore.

My question is : Would other main wiring harnesses from other models and years work on my 88 R100RS ?
If anyone knows , please list the models and years.

Haynes and Clymer are vague and the dealers don't know much past their computers . . .

Thanks :?: :?:

My best guess is that the RT is your closest option, then maybe the R80, with serious mods. A loom from a recent wreck maybe?

Looks like a small niche market might open up for someone with the skill and time to make these looms. The issue may be the unusual connectors, but there would be ways to adapt to them I expect.

There is a guy on the ADV forums that makes looms for airheads. I am at work so can't access my favorites as I have his site bookmarked. Will get this and post it up here when I get home tonight.

I have a 1981 R100RS, I just got it. My problem is that when I turn the headlight on the motor cuts out.
the bike holds a charge, Starts right up, Runs great!. The last owner could not give me much history on it,
he had 2 other BMW's that he took as payment on a debt, He had a 1975 R90S mint and a 1975 R/75 mint.
he still has the two BMW's as of 2/11

Welcome Bob, and congratulations on your new bike. When I got my 78 RS, there were several misconnected wires, and had it not been for the advice I got here, I'd still be stationary .
More experienced voices will soon chime in, I'm sure -- but for now, I'd suggest you start a new thread, describing what you can about the bike, and your level of experience, so the advice can be tailored to fit.
There's plenty of good information on the 'net to show you how to access the headlight shell, should you need to take a look in, and detailing what goes where, so you won't be short of information.
From your post, I get the impression that you like the bike ...?
Best of luck.

From Bob D
I love it, it's the BMW I always wanted. I Have had 4 BMW's, But I have not had a ride in 10 years.
The bike has 56k on it, It's a 1981, has DeLorto's40mm, Light fly wheel, Stainless brake hoses, Fork Brace,
and a Corbin seat, It was set up just as I would have liked. It's a little cold blooded needs FULL choke. starts
right up, with a little spiting and farting. I have only ridden about 150 miles, I just put the plate on last week.
I thought that I had the lights on after riding 45 miles, when I turned the lights on the bike shut down. Also my right
front turn signal stopped working. I found out that I had a signal light out because of the rapid flash.
When the bikes NOT running I have lights. Key on for ignition, the lo and high beam work, NOT when running?

That's all folks

PS My RS has set backs, My wife is a P.T. SOoooo she helping this 58 y.o bend like I have not bent in years!

New Post, IT'S FIXED! My R100RS is well again, I had a bad ground wire, and on my turn
signal front ,the ground wire came lose. I'm off in the A.M. to get my toy inspected. The temp will be about 55
WITHOUT rain.

Every one have a great Easter/ Passover.
