Front mud guard fastenings .

These things ....how do I undo them? Are they just a plastic cap over a thread or something cunning? I thought I'd ask before butchering them .

They are on the front mudguard of an ST .

I don't know Sibbo, but they look fun to play with!
Is there a bolt head on the inside? If there is, I'd start there.

No ,it's another little plastic blank / cover.I could try to pop the cap off the outside ? Maybe .

Sibbo - looks like they're just plastic covers. Lever them off and Bob's yer mum's brother...

Thanks Daniel ,that was a helpful diagram ! I want to fabricate a couple of brackets to lift my front mudguard 50mm or so, it's far too close if there is much mud on the road .

Careful what you do to the fork brace Sibbo, how are you going to do the job?

Very thoughtfully now that you have mentioned that .The guard fills with mud and is much too close on a bike that is happy on the dirt .I wonder how the R 80GS forks are set up .........and BTW , thanks for the tip .

It pretty damn flimsy as a fork brace .

IIRC Sibbo, the forks on your ST are straight off the R65 road bike, and as such are a completely different marsupial to the forks fitted to the GS. which, again if memory serves, are the same as the ones fitted to the road-going twin shock R80/R100 from '81 to '84. I reckon the first mudguard in the fiche pic above shows the GS mudguard bolting directly to the underneath of the bottom yoke.

Here's my ST , I thought the forks were the same ...but I'm probably wrong

.I was going to fabricate a brace that went were the current job goes , even detach the fork brace from the guard and just lift the plastic section .The brace shouldn't get clogged with mud but the guard is too large an area and too close ,it will .

I was thinking about a high guard as well but the fork brace would have to remain where it is I reckon.
Building off the existing fork brace a couple of inches would be doable as long as the guard looks ok.
The integrity of the brace must remain and not be distorted with any welding etc.
Sibbo could always modify the guard to look more like an off road type.
