Oil pressure

Anybody got a link that describes the problem with the ball and spring in the filter chamber? I have a buddy who is experiencing oil pressure problems on an R90.

The ball and spring won't affect oil pressure as such.
The damage done by a piece/s of broken spring getting into the mains/big end is what causes low oil pressure.

Check the ball is spring loaded against the back of the retaining plug in the oil filter canister.
Do this check with anything long enough and thin enough to push the ball. You could push it 3-4mm without causing any harm.
There may not be much spring resistance at all, it doesn't matter. As long as the ball is pushed up against the plug.
A ball that is pushed against the plug would be a very strong indicator that the spring is ok.

What are your friends oil pressure symptoms? It could be a number of possibilities.

He's a great old guy still trying to do some of his own maintenance. He changed his oil and after a short ride the oil pressure light came on. He parked it. I'm going through the white O ring and matching shim procedure with him, and am just trying to guess whatever might have caused his problem. I'm unable to get to the bike to have a look for a while.

Yeah, that's totally unrelated to the spring/ball issue. Definitely sounds more like a $2000 O-ring issue. Hopefully he turned it off early enough to prevent that result.

Will a missing o ring cause the oil light to come on?

The R90 doesn't use the big white O-Ring.
They didn't start until the 77 model came out in late 76.
Check the oil pressure light switch at the engine, they fail.

I just checked the bike is a 1974 750.

Hopefully it is the oil pressure sender. My R75/6 had one sender fail and has had about 3 of them start leaking. PITA!

You can check for oil pump function and a hint of oil pressure by pulling off a valve cover to see if oil is flowing. If it is flowing, that would most likely show the pressure sender unit is bad.
