1973 R75/5
Gave my original Starter relay to relative to get his /5 running and ordered a new one from Rick at Motorrad Elektrik.
Bike was running perfect before (and charging) but now with the new relay, the charge light won't go out.
The only thing different with the new relay is you have to connect the two blue wires together rather than connect them both to the old relay. Shouldn't matter as the old relay was just a connection point also.
Rotor ohms out at 7.1 ohms, Stator resistance is about .7 to .9 ohms between each of the three lugs. Brushes are good, long, clean and springs are tight.
Voltage regulator test (bypass the voltage regulator) still doesn't extinguish the light (tested to 4,000 rpm).
Any thoughts would be appreciated

Re: Charge Light
Does the bike charge when the v/reg is bypassed?
Does the light go out when one brush is lifted off the rotor?
Check with Rick. Perhaps a bad relay can cause this. Never had this problem.

Re: Charge Light
The bike does not charge when the VR is bypassed (connect the two lower wires)
The light does go out (with the engine not running only) if either of the two brush wires are disconnected (as expected since I've opened the circuit through the rotor).
Think I'm going to check brush spring pressure and the diode board tonight.
Man, I miss riding this bike with the heat raging across the Midwest
thanks,

Re: Charge Light
Rick, as you can see by reading my threads, I don't know much about this subject. I'm learning and grateful for that. But I thought I'd just say good luck with this.

There's a bit of info in this thread, an attempt to summarise experiences from multiple sources. Might help, might not.

Re: Charge Light
Thank you Steve and Chuey. Last night I re-installed my old oem relay (that doesn't spin the starter because I cleaned the relay contacts a litle too aggressively
. But, when wired up and kickstarting the bike, the charge light goes out immediately. Therefore, it has to be something in the wiring with the new relay. I contacted Rick Jones, still waiting for a call back/email.

Ahhh, the old aggressive cleaning.
At my age I try not to do anything too aggressivly.
Edit: Maybe cornering.

Re: Charge Light
problem solved apparently. Being the gentleman that he is, Rick Jones called me and said he sent the wrong relay. The delivered one has a 87 and a 87a terminal. Connect the double red wire into the 87a terminal and the starter spins w/o the ignition on. Knew that wasn't right. On the old relay, there's only a double 87 terminal and both sets of red wires go there and the starter doesn't spin w/o ignition on. (as expected)
He's sending me the correct relay. I could just add the single red wire to the double red (87 terminal) but less cutting and hacking on a 40 year old bike original /5 is always better IMHO.
I love my 1150RT but sorely miss riding my /5.
