Thanks Charlie, good location for the switch!

Going to try this new/used Omega look-a-like I got. Originally came from Ulis Motorradladen in Germany. There's pic of it in my other posted thread. Maybe try an find a new location to mount unit under tank somewhere (out of the weather and cooler) for the processing black box. This after reading maybe Omega problems due to heat mounted under front cover. Maybe experiment with it first.

Stephen B posted link to this particular unit from Ulis in earlier post in this thread. Arn't cheap at 216 EU (VAT out)!! Makes that about $300 CDN...same as for you $300 AUS. :o

Let you know how it goes. Still can't get the current points ignition system running on the /7...everything checks out continuity wise but I think the old battery is the culprit...no guts left in her so will jumper to spare car battery to see if we can get a spark going. Shit...I hate electrons...give me wood and a hammer anyday!

Re: Advance unit....Omega Hijack

Did a little search and found this post about the Omega ignition. Mine officially went toes up today. Had a previous posting about having an intermitent ignition failure. Bike made one mighty backfire and ran fine for a couple of months. Today it had the courtesy of dying just as I turned in to the Walgreens parking lot. I had not made the switch that GSPD has but it isn't any problem unplugging the hot from the coil to the omega, removing the ground from the omega to the coil and plugging in the condenser. Thankfully I set the points and timed it just after the first episode and within 5 minutes I was back on the road.

The omega is dead, long live the points!!!!!

Not being one to leave well enough alone, what do youall think of the Dyna111 ignition module that lowers voltage to the points. Is it reliable and do the points really last 100K miles?

I have not used a Dyna like that but had a 1972 Mercedes that had a Bosch system like that from the factory as well as a point amplifier on my boat for a few years. Neither system was anywhere near trouble free.

You still had to set and adjust the points regularly. Point gap aside it seemed that the points where not happy without a certain amount of current flowing through them. They seemed to glaze over or something. Periodic filing or replacement was still needed to keep them running in top form, even though the contacts looked perfect.

A lot of "point wear" can actually be wear of the rubbing block. What level of current is passing through the points would have no affect on that issue.

I've never had the point gap "wear" too large to run right, but I've had the gap "wear" down to nothing (on motorcycles), and that is rubbing block wear.

IRT Dyna III, it has worked perfectly for 60K miles on my R75/6. My brother's R110/7 suffered a Dyna III black box failure (no idea how many miles/years it had been on there). He replaced the little black box and is running fine. I do carry a set of points/plate/ condensor on any trip out of town - that guarantees I'll never have to use it.
