New from EME, an "airhead priced" gear reduction 8 tooth starter for 70 to 76 bikes.

I just ordered one and will keep all updated on how it lasts. It's going on my winter /5 which gets ridden to work daily all winter. That should be a bit of a test.

I've been eying that myself. I am interested in the weight savings, besides, mine is 34 years old and I've no idea how long they last.

I've had the Valeo 8 tooth in my /2 conversion for 5 summers now. I was looking for lower battery draw as I have no room for a real battery in the /2. I used the Valeo in my /5 last winter and had no problem starting it well below freezing. The winter before freezing was the limit of the Bosch's ablity.

I have had on of the cheap Valeos copies on my 1000cc R80 G/S for 2 years/ 60,000 km and it has performed perfectly.
The bike bursts into life at a touch of the button, unlike the Bosch bikes where it seems the starter has to grind over for a few seconds before it fires.
I bought the upgrade starter leads too, half the price of elsewhere, and have a Motobatt battery which seem better than every other brand I have tried, at a good price - in Oz half the cost of a Oddessy or Deka.

I've been real happy with EME products/service and John's willingness to make aftermarket improvements to outdated airhead electrical parts. Not sure why he makes a disclaimer about the use of Lithium Iron Batteries on several of his Enduralast parts though. I have onefitted, works well at a good price. Only problem was solenoid sticking on yesterday. I broke the world record for unpacking the bike and getting the tool kit out to disconnect the battery. With the current off, the solenoid reset. If this continues is there anything I can do? Or just replace the solenoid?

The only time that happened to me was with a Bosch starter and a very poor battery. A new battery fixed it. Solenoids typicaly fail the way yours did from too many engaments in a row. They weld close.
The Valeo solenoid is sealed so I doubt if there is anything you can do but replace it.
Edit: Maybe park on a hill.

The reason for the cheap price is because it's manufactured in CHINA. The Valeo starters were/are made in France.
When they first hit the streets and then started falling apart several years later, we at BMW dealers named them "the French Revenge"
