R60/5 transmission stuck in gear

Post by Curt Henry »

Local Craigslist there is a 72 R60/5 that has the transmission stuck in gear. I have rebuild a later BMW transmission from the 92 R100GS, how different are these gear boxes and any ideas why it is stuck?

As always I am looking for a project bike(s).

Probably the broken $5 pawl spring. I believe part #7, 23311242910:

There's a service instruction associated with it.

The 1970 to 80 gearboxes have a different length input shaft than the 81 and on.

If you want to use a newer box in an old bike you need to swap the newer light flywheel and clutch as well. Except they newer flywheel uses 11mm bolts at the crank and the /5 and early /6 used 10mm.

I didn't think Curt meant to swap boxes. I thought he was just interested in any significant diferences internally between the 4-spd vs 5-spd boxes. In case he gets an itch.

They are totally different animals... I was under the impression that the 'pawl spring issue' only affected the 5 speed boxes. I wouldn't want to assume that was the problem.

Duane's site has a bunch of info on common problems on /2 and /5 boxes.

Edit: The 4 speeds are generaly more reliable and less sought after than the good 5 speeds, as a result cheaper and safer to buy used.
