Some good news. I braced my instrument cluster and now it does not shake when I ride. The erratic movement of the tach has diminished--only happens once in a while. I then put my front tire against the garage and let out the clutch and the motor died. There is play on the clutch lever. So, I conclude the problem is electrical with the tach. Curt suggested that I may just have corrosion on the cluster plug contacts. So, I'll get around to cleaning them off.

Thanks much for your expert consultation. I guess I can put off that clutch replacement for a while yet.

Great to hear an after-action report, George.
Just for info...my old clutch ran fine until it was only 3mm thick. whoops! That's why I replaced everything.
It had a LOT of Km on it...and it didn't slip. I was going in there to replace the rear main seal.
