Hazard wiring issue

Post by gabriel »

i recently restored my 85 r80. got her running great but have a problem with my hazards and rear light (all bulbs are new). the wiring is one area i suck at, so i labled everything before taking it apart, and all components worked then. now i get a buzzing from the hazard relay (new) when i turn the left flasher on and only get the rear right flasher to work when i turn the right on. i checked the voltage of the four wires that go to the fuse box. i get 30+mv from the double green/black wire, 3+mv from the double gray/black wire, and 0mv from the green and grey single wires. the headlight works but the tail and brake lights do not but the wiring seems to be in place. honestly not sure what that tells me so please excuse my ignorance. any advice on how to further trouble shooot would be greatly appreciated.

Is it the correct flasher unit? If you're confident the wiring is correct, then the only other thing that's new is the relay.

it's definitely the right unit. incidentally, i replaced the old relay thinking it was bad. getting the same exact problem with the new one which arrived yesterday morning. i am confounded. i'm 99% confident the wiring is correct. one other observation i made, which may not mean much, is that the signal light on the cluster is solid green when i turn it to the left (that's when the relay buzzes), and it does not light up when i turn it to the right even though the right rear flashes.

Well, if you are 99% confident that the wiring is correct, then it has to be a bad ground, as 99% of weird turn-signal behavior is caused by ground problems.

You just can't argue with math.

yeah, after some more digging on the web i've seen a lot of hazard issues being bad ground related. it warmed up today so i'll go into the shop and tinker around some more. will let you know if that works. thanks for the help, ya'll.
