/5 rear mudflap mounting

1973 R75/5,
I have a NEW rear mudflap (#46 62 1 230 766) that I want to run but I REALLY!! do not want to drill holes in my fender. Will adhesive-backed, industrial-strength Velcro hold (I want it INSIDE the rear fender)? How did you mount yours?

You should be able to stick it to the inside of your fender with 3M trim adhesive.

Forget the Velcro, it will only trap crap and eventually fail. I'd use Household Goop on spotlessly clean surfaces. Scrub the contact patches on the mudflap to give the adhesive better "tooth" and remove any wax or other coating it had from the factory. It won't take much, just a bead on all contact surfaces, you don't have to fill all the gaps with it.

I'm with George: The 3M adhesive will probably yield better results on both plastic and rubber.

BUT, Tim is definitely right about how important cleaning is, with either adhesive. Most plastic and rubber parts are covered with mold release. Glues hate that stuff. I scrub such things with paint-prep solvent (DX330) before trying to stick them together, but alcohol is an acceptable substitute if you don't have anything like that around.

I would put the mudflap on ebay and not drill holes. What the hell does a mudflap do but allow people to tailgate without getting their vehicle soiled?

Mounting it inside the fender will give you less mud flap effective protective area. Don't be a slave to fashion. I have a flap on the front as well and much more important IMNSHO. If you're going Goop style ( which has never failed me in many applications) in addition to clamps, you can stuff lots of rags between the tire and fender to keep pressure on the flap while drying. Do not even look at it for 24 hours. After drying is complete, I run some silicone rubber sealant to keep crap off the goop adhered areas. But that's on my Jap scrap. On my Bay Emm Vay I drill the dam holes like a man, and install with stainless nylock nut and bolt, sealing out the crap with silicone sealant. I'm really into flaps.

I think Vince is wary of drilling holes in the rear fender because it is a steel (?) fender and he doesn't want to mess up a nice expensive piece.

Vince, couldn't you source a later model plastic fender to do the deed to, and save your original fender in the closet?

Basically the flap is "bling", I just REALLY like the way it looks.

Vince is nervous about drilling the holes because the thought of getting after "Baby" with a drill makes his stomach hurt a little and he was looking for something "reversible".

So is it a metal fender or plastic?

Either way, get a 2nd and drill the lesser of the two.

on my73 it is attached to the inner fender by the bolt/stud that is on the rear reflector I also like the look
