Heated grips

While my other bikes do have heated grips, my R100S does not. Last week I bought a pair of Held warm and dry gloves that are designed to be used with heated grips. They have no insulation on the palms in order for the heated grips to be more effective transmitting heat.

My question: Is it worth sourcing (A) OEM harness and grips or (B) to just install some after market under grip warmers?

If I chose B I would install a relay.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of installation with OEM grips? Are they pliable enough to get them over undergrip warmers? I'd be using a kit like this:

I use that type of grip heaters with grab on foam grips, they work well enough, but better all weather protection with the ATV hand covers by Ducks unlimited.

I have those Dual Star heaters under my stock OEM grips with GS handgurds.
I made a 1/4" slit in the throttle grip for the wire and left a loop to handle the rotation.

I also have those type heated grips, like dougie I have them under stock grips. They work fine, have had them for a long time. The resistors went south so I found some ceramic resistors in an auto parts store and fixed that. I did install them before I knew much about relays, but really no problems. Lo switch works great for moderating heat after the hi setting heats things up. Can't beat the cost.

There are under grip heaters that have a resistor for the low setting. There are under grip heaters that have a second circuit. Run one circuit for low then two fro high. Any idea which type is more reliable?

In theory the dual circuit ones should be better as there is no heat generated in the control. And if one circuit burns out there is another, although not as warm circuit.

In reality quality and reputation is what counts.

The resistor controller ones can be upgraded with a rheostat to give you "infinite" control. I think this is a nice feature. I often find myself having to switch back and forth between high and low on the two heat units to get the right amount of heat.

A "rheostat" is nothing more than a variable resister. Except when full on, it will displace some of the energy in the form of heat at the rheostat. That energy (electric power) is being wasted for nothing.

The ones with the hi/lo switch are only switching in device to reduce the voltage electronically. They waste little energy, but are limited in the ability to adjust to the exact right amount to procude the needed heat level. They can produce radio noise too, but really should be damped out to comply with the law regarding spurious emmissions.
