shaft oil

84 R100: My owners manual has a written notation to reduce the oil volume from the printed 150 ml to 100ml. Is this still the way to go? With such a small volume should it be changed more often than the rear gear oil? I'm using synthetic gear oil so I don't change as often, maybe every other year. The bike is ridden regularly, but I don't put lots of miles on this machine. The oil looks clear and clean. What say you?

As long as you have oil in the shaft your are fine. It just lubes the splines at the diff and the U-joint. Neither need much, just need to be wet. Neither ware much so there is little metal, like the gear box or drive, so there will be little crap in the oil.

We just change oil in the shaft cuz we're airhead owners. It's not like it's an modern BMW that is all dry and sealed for life.

Hey this is the Serious part of the forum. Technical questions. I don't fool around in this forum unless the thread gets degraded. I suggest that the Airhead is the Boobiest motorcycle of all!

Yes. I'm recording more info maintenance all the time. It's so easy to forget what you have done in a years time. When you have several bikes in operation, it becomes even more important. I also find the digital camera, during disassembly, a real time saver when things go back together.

Some run it dry, I prefer some lubrication. Doesn't take much to keep all the mating parts happy.
