R100RT gas tank filler cap issue.

Post by luckyjohn »

Good morning all.
I have started a restoration on a '79 R100RT.
The gas tank filler cap and its threaded tank attachment rotate together when I try to remove the cap.
Does anybody know of a non-invasive remedy?
Thank you.

If you are saying you can't remove the cap, put a loop of rope through the handle and give it a sharp upward jerk. It should come out.

Thanks Tim.
I'll give that a try.
The male and female halves, including the gasket, rotate together when I unscrew the cap. My gorilla-grip assistant can stop the gasket from rotating but the cap still does not unscrew.
Time to use brute force.

When you get it out, see Anton's bit on the holes and putting something in there to stop the rotation. I've had caps like that for years. Occasionally it's wise to ensure the bits you put in there are still there, but it does prevent the spinning cap scenario.
