R100 - R75 tank swap

Post by sprints@pldi.net »

I'm new to the club and about to get my 1st BMW, a 74 r75 / 6. I've been collecting info, photos, and tech articles and I ran across a photo of a most beautiful bright red r100/7. I love the styling and wonder if that style tank would fit my r75?
I live in Oklahoma, have a family CNC machine shop and have had bikes my whole life (including my own Harley shop - please don't hold that against me), but I've never thrown a leg over a BMW so I'm pumped - Rod

Your own CNC shop? - you'll be made more than welcome here I'm sure. I believe the /7 tank will fit but then the seat won't. The /5 & 6 tanks are shorter than the /7s so you would have to fit a /7 seat also. Funny I'm looking to do the opposite!

Yes that right the /7 tank fits the frame and not the seat

You could remove the first 2" of seat and make it work Like I did on my first BMW a 1974 R90/6

If you ever Jones for quicker handeling, then the Swing arm from a SWB /5 and a R65 subframe is a ticket the R65 seat will bolt right up BUT a SWB seat needs 2" removed from the seat tip
