clutch help
Greetings and thanks in advance
r60/6 When I release the clutch handle, the clutch grabs very hard and quickly at the very end.The clutch does not slip at all. Can someone please tell me which adjustment I need to make

Don't pull the transmission just yet. It is not an adjustment.
Ask the Indians what happens when you don't control immigration.

Thanks for the response. It seems to get a little worse when hot , but not real drastically

In any case, you must pull the transmission out. Of course you will clean and lube the splines while in there, but that probably isn't your problem, it seldom is.
I would measure the input shaft end play and expect it to exceed the spec of .004" or .1 mm. That is the adjustment that you need to make. I would space it down to 1/2 that spec at room temperature. The rear cover must be removed to get to the shafts. It may be better to consider sending it off to a rebuilder, a good one.
I always advise using Google for these things. Just put in something like "bmw motorcycle grabby clutch" and you will get the answer.

MS, you are prescient.
I just tried a few different search terms that were likely and all gave my page as #1. I went to a whole lot of trouble to have my pages show up in a logical Google search. I don't know why people don't use the search function rather than post somewhere and wait around for an answer. Especially since one could get an answer that is wrong or incomplete.
It is possible to lube the clutch splines and have the grabbyness go away, at least for awhile. What happens is if the resistance of the friction plate is lower on the spline than the shaft is in the case, it will engage smoothly. However, it is only a short matter of time (usually) before some dirt gets on the spline, or the lube gets dry, or goes away and it is again grabby. The real fix is to have the transmission input shaft stay where it belongs, as then it really doesn't matter if the lube is not doing its job, at least not as far as engagement is concerned.
