cam chain tensioner

Post by chuck »

I am checking out the motor block [recently purchased used] while overhauling. 1982 R100. Single row cam chain.
Above the chain spring loaded tensioner is a small cup that is part of the main bearing carrier casting. I believe the purpose of the cup is to catch oil that may be flying around in the chain chamber and funnel it down to the tensioner plunger so that the plunger acts much like a hydraulic tappet. Seems to me that there should be a small hole at bottom of cup to allow oil to get behind tensioner piston. Did the factory forget to drill a hole in my carrier cup?
Any comments? Thanks

My 81 RS has a hole.
Its only small, I can get a measure later when I get home if no one else comes up with the goods.
I haven't heard of the hole becoming obsolete?
