Tacho Is Playing Up Folks

Post by grant81rs »

Gidday fellas,

Well I thought i fixed the problem a few weeks back as it was all working then, but on the weekend when I went off early on the Oz workz rally the tacho took an hour to fire up basically and then it was like in slow motion

It slowly came up on the gauge from 1rpm to 4rpm over that hour and was not real responsive.......Any ideas and where do I start to fix this problem.......Anyone wishing to speak up come forth this instant with your wisdome ASAP

Thanks
Cheers, Grant

When it's 'warmed up' is it working normally or is it still slow?

Normally, but would not drop down to "0", it always sat back at 1500rpms and again on the sunday morning it took 1 hour to get up to pace.....

Could this be dodgy wiring at the coil end of things? Would a tidy up of the connections/the earth help?
Rob?

A definite possibility, and always the first thing to check.
You should have battery voltage at the tach +
good solid ground at the tach -
and no resistance between the coil - and the tach 'z' terminal (black wire).

I'd be worried about the failure to drop beck to zero... that amcks of a physical problem with the needle rather than an electrical problem. I think I'd pull the instrument out of the casing and see if the needle has sticky bearings or any obstruction.

Gidday fellas,

As for the tacho I cleaned up all the connections on the both coils and the earth, shit they were dirty as I had never done that before, I know, I know call me a slackass, anyway I tighten them all up like new then started the bike and still no difference, so off came the tacho again and I pulled it to bits.
Last time I opened it up about two months back I sprayed onto the little pointy lugs that attached to the back of the instrument unit some lanoline electrical protector / anit corrosive spray and it had gone slightly tachy so I cleaned everything up again, put it all back together minus the spray this time and bingo it worked like a new one, very responsive and now drops back to 0rpms....How long for time I don't know so I'll wait and see.

Once again, thanks for the advice and guidance.... ;)

Re: Tacho Is STILL Playing Up Folks

Gidday fellas,

Went for a 200km ride this afternoon to visit my dad's best mate Eric and his wife, had a lovely cuppa and chat a, the sun was shining and my ole RS just purded along nicely.....But the tacho is still playing up

Today it took about 15mins to get up the 3000rpms, although I was doing 70mph the tacho should of been sitting on 4000rpms, then it came good but was all very slow to react....

Anyone have any idea's or is it time for a new one...Am I missing something????

If you don't have any luck Grant, I have one spare. Does our fav. local parts man or ebay.de seller have any? I'm not sure what one's worth all by itself, especially with mates rates! ;)
