clutch dragging on my R100GS, need help diagnosing

Howdy all. I put my 1988 R100GS together after replacing the bottom end. I got it running last night and took it for a test ride today. I can't get the clutch to disengage fully when I squeeze the clutch lever on the handle bar. I tried it with the clutch adjusted properly, I also tried to give it more and then less free place in the lever assembly. even with all the free play taken out the clutch still drags, doesn't want to go into gear and doesn't want to go back into neutral, and the bike creeps when I come to a stop with the clutch lever pulled in. I guess that when the lever is pulled the rod doesn't push the pressure plate far enough away to free the clutch disc from contacting it.

Clutch is used, I swapped the clutch pack from the broken bottom end to another unit, I didn't swap flywheel/clutch carrier. I used the one that came with the good used bottom end. Maybe there was a little spline wear between the disc and the input shaft but nothing serious. Clutch arm, bearing assembly rod etc are all on proper working order.

Can anyone shed some light on the situation and tell me how I'm not getting full disengagement of the clutch when I squeeze the lever???
Anyone experienced a similar same issue before? What am I missing here? Something obvious I hope...

New used bottom end? I assume you lubed the splines? Look though the timing hole, see if the flywheel moves forward when you depress the clutch lever. I think Duane has something about this on his website.

There is also the clutch plate thickness thingy as well. Maybe the new friction plate is too thick?

Are you sure of the status of the throwout bearing?

well. I diddled it some more. The actuality is I didnt have the free play correct. I thought I had it right. I took up most of the slack at the clutch arm and less of it at the lever & got the clutch to work right. Now to put some miles under this beast
