Yet another tank lining thread (but with a twist)

1973 R75/5 toaster (I know!)

The bike sat in a private museum for 27 years, when I first got it I flushed the tank with Alchohol and got a BUNCH of that red tank-lining out of it.

2 years later and my tank is "shedding" tank-lining again, I need/want to seal it BUT I have good to decent ORIGINAL paint that I want to preserve!!

So far the plan is: remove the panels, wrap the tank in plastic-sheeting and blue painters tape, add 3 cups of aquarium rocks and 1/2 gallon of vinegar, shake until clean, flush-out the tank and line with POR-15.

What am I missing here?

Not sure what the sheeting and painter's tape is going to do for you. I don't think blue painter's tape is impervious to water/vinegar. I'd just work very hard at making sure the holes were sealed up and not worry about the painted exterior.

Does vinegar eat paint? If so, you could wax the heck out of the exterior and then buff it when you're done.

My thinking is that the Vinegar will loosen the factory tank-lining and be a bit easier to deal with than a stronger acid. I think if I get the "loosest" bits of factory-lining out I can coat over what's left.

I used appropriate sized crutch/walking stick rubber ends with hose clamps to seal off the petcock openings.

Just my 2¢.
Vinegar is not a strong enough acid for the job.
Aquarium rocks are not strong enough for the job.
Consider trying a length of chain or bolts and nuts and some of this:
