r65 sidestand

Post by derek1922 »

Hi guys
I have a 1983 r65,the centrestand springs and spring hangers were missing when i got the bike,i cant seem to figure how the hangers attach to the frame.
I've tried to find a picture online but no joy, does anyone have a picture of where the hangers mount?
thanks.

Do you have a sidestand installed?
The hanger for the sidestand is one spring fixing location. Should have an "extra hole" for the hook-end.
The other should be mounted on the engine mounting bolt between the engine and the right-side frame.
The springs hold the stand forward-down when deployed, and as you retract it, they pass over-center of the pivot and hold it UP.
(A ride-off stand puts their springs in a different location so the stand will retract without any help from your toe.)

Thanks for your reply, yes the sidestand is fitted,I was round at the workshop yesterday and after doing the clutch (yippee) i had a look where to mount the spring tangs, sorry but i can be as dumb as a box of rocks sometimes but i can't see anywhere for these tangs to mount, reading your reply it seems that you don't know about the tangs.
The tangs go between the spring and wherever they mount to on the frame, they're like flat oblong metal strips about 3 inches long with a hook on one end and near the other end there's a keyhole shaped opening drilled into the flat to attach to the frame.
If i could get a photo I'd be sorted.
Thanks again.

I hate it when stuff gets taken off...
Do you actually have the tangs?
We don't have an R65 any more, so a picture is not possible.
Have you tried a look at the MAX BMW parts fisch on the 'net to see if their picture of the relative parts could give you a hint?

Have a good hard look around the rear thru-bolt that holds the engine in place. The BIG new Clymer manual seems to show the springs hooked onto something there. The place for the hook will be between the engine and the frame.

Still in the shower.
Anyhow, it's been a while and he might not have examined the centerstand fixing points.

why is this thread called "Sidestand" anyhow?
It's really all about the CENTERstand.

The hook is for one end of the spring,Yes i do have the tangs ,the "keyhole" shaped hole at the opposite end of the tang(actually the keyhole is upside down) suggests there are pins or collars somewhere that the tangs clip on to and lock in.
I did look on MAX BMW but the diagram is the same one that's on REAL OEM.
Thanks you your input,I really appreciate it.
