bmw r65 swingarm pivot bolts

Post by derek1922 »

Still working on the r65 but I'm getting there.
Just a tip if anyone hasn't come across this problem.
Working yesterday on getting the swing arm central and couldn't get it,it kept getting pushed to the right side, the right hand side pin torqued up but when i tightened up the left hand side everything got pushed to the right.
Removed the swingarm to check the bearings, they were fine,I had a eureka moment (haven't had too many of them lately) and screwed the pivot pin into the frame on the left hand side and it went through no problem,it screwed all the way through, doing the same on the right hand side i discovered it wouldn't go all the way through, not even close to it.
The threads on the inside of the hole are damaged thereby stopping the pivot pin from going all the way through.
I'm going to re-tap the threads tomorrow after i borrow a M20 tap,hopefully that'll be it.
The moral of the story is check the threads on the pivot bolt hole if your doing a restoration and don't know the history of the bike, they might be damaged and a 10 second check will save much swearing as your taking the swingarm off again!.

If you need a reason, you don't really like it.

The tap needed is an M20 with a 1.5 pitch.
I've had to order one as no-one around here has one in stock.

That tap (and the matching die)is another 'must have' in the toolbox of a serious boxer tinkerer. The torque on the pivot is fairly critical and these threads do get damaged/clogged with rubbish. The pivot should turn freely right the way through the thread range otherwise it's impossible to set the torque accurately.

Almost done, everything back together, tried to start it but wouldn't keep running, probably hasn't run in years,I'll keep tinkering.
Does anyone know if ultrasonic cleaning the carbs actually works?

Indian used one on many parts of his R90S, and they came out great. I'm sure there are some way better than others, but I don't know how you tell. I think the one he used was in a co-op garage and it was of a relatively industrial level

I have a small one that I use for carbs specifically, and it makes the castings look like new.
